Gary Webb

Gary Stephen Webb (August 31, 1955 – December 10, 2004) was an American investigative reporter. He began his career working for newspapers in Kentucky and Ohio, winning numerous awards and building a strong reputation for investigative writing. Hired by the San Jose Mercury News, Webb contributed to the paper's Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the Loma Prieta earthquake. Webb is best known for his "Dark Alliance" series, which appeared in the Mercury News in 1996. The series examined the origins of the crack-cocaine trade in Los Angeles and claimed that members of the anti-government Contra rebels in Nicaragua had played a major role in creating the trade, using cocaine profits to support their struggle. It also suggested that the Contras may have acted with the knowledge and protection of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The series provoked outrage in Los Angeles, particularly in the African-American community, and led to four major investigations of its charges.

The series became even more controversial when the Los Angeles Times and other major papers published articles suggesting its claims were overstated. After an internal review, the Mercury News ultimately published a statement in May 1997 acknowledging shortcomings in the series' reporting and editing. Webb resigned from the Mercury News in December 1997. He became an investigator for the California State Legislature, publishing a book based on the "Dark Alliance" series in 1998, and doing freelance investigative reporting. Webb committed suicide on December 10, 2004.

Gary Webb (born July 17, 1961) is an American professional golfer who played on the Nationwide Tour.

Webb was born in Pampa, Texas. He played college golf at the University of Texas at Austin. He turned pro in 1984.

Webb joined the Nationwide Tour in 1991 and recorded four top-10 finishes in his rookie year. He only played in 15 events from 1992 to 1995 but finished in a tie for second at the Nike Dakota Dunes Open in 1994. Two years later he picked up his first win on Tour in a playoff at the Nike Dakota Dunes Open. He picked up his second victory at the Nike Fort Smith Classic in 1999. His last full season on the Nationwide Tour came in 2000 and he played in his last event on Tour in 2003.

Gary Webb (artist)

Gary Webb (born 1973 in Bascombe, Dorset) is a British artist. He makes sculptures out of industrial materials, often achieving comic effects with the use of sound.

He studied at Goldsmiths College between 1994 and 1997.

Exhibitions

Webb's solo debut was an exhibition entitled "Gary Webb plays Gary Webb" at The Approach in 1998. In 2000 he collaborated with Keith Farquhar on a sculptural installation at the Approach, and in 2001 he curated the group show "Brown," for the same gallery.

Webb participated in "Early One Morning", a group exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery, in 2002. Reviewing the show, Richard Dorment described him as "the most original young artist I've come across in almost 15 years of writing art criticism." His first solo exhibition in a public gallery was at the Chisenhale Gallery in 2004.

Webb's work is in the collection of the Tate.

Gary Webb (racing driver)

Gary Webb (born April 19, 1949) is an American racing driver from Blue Grass, Iowa who won the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series national championship in 2000. He received a $150,000 bonus.

Webb began racing in 1968 in a late model. He had 201 features wins between 1980 and 1989. He won the 1984 and 1985 UMP national championships.

Driving a dirt late model for owner Larry Moring (sponsor of Tom Hearst's team which won the 1982 title) and another dirt Late Model of his own, Webb won 22 of the 54 NASCAR-sanctioned races that he entered at Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway and Farley Speedway, both in Iowa. His record of 16 wins in 18 starts at the 3/8 mile track at Dubuque won the national title and the Mid American division.

Webb finished second in the 2001 national championship points. He was the series' Most Popular Driver that year.
