Gary Miller

Gary Gene Miller (born October 16, 1948) is an American politician, who was the Republican U.S. Representative for California's 31st congressional district. He was first elected in 1998 and served until 2015, when he retired. The district includes most of southern and western San Bernardino County. He previously represented the 42nd District from 1999 to 2013 (numbered as the 41st from 1993 to 2003). In February 2014, Miller announced he would stand down at the next election.

Early life, education, and business career

Miller was born in Huntsville, Arkansas, but grew up in Whittier, California. He attended Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, California, and served briefly in the United States Army in 1967 being discharged after seven weeks of boot camp at Fort Ord near Monterey.

He is a businessman who founded several companies bearing his name, including G. Miller Development, G. Miller Masonry, and G. Miller Framing. At the age of 20, he began his first company, which built single-family and custom homes. His business expanded to the development of planned communities. Miller remains active in real estate through his development company.

Education

Miller graduated in the same high school class, in Naperville, Illinois, as former CNN news anchor Paula Zahn.

He has a bachelor's degree in communications at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and was the sports director at the campus radio (WSIU (FM)) and television (WSIU-TV) stations.

Broadcasting career

WSAV-TV, CNN and Headline News

From 1978–82, he was the Sports Director at WSAV-TV in Savannah, Georgia. Before Miller came to ESPN, he spent eight years at CNN and Headline News as part of their sports coverage.

ESPN

From 1990 to 2004, Miller worked at ESPN. He was an anchor at SportsCenter, the host of ESPN's Baseball Tonight, and the last host of the sports interview show Up Close before it was canceled in 2001. Miller also occasionally did play-by-play of Major League Baseball games, and was the primary dugout reporter on Monday Night baseball broadcasts, as well as ESPN Daygame. Other play-by-play assignments during this period included games of the College World Series and the Little League World Series.

Gary Miller (conductor)

Gary Miller (born 1946) is an American conductor, gay activist, and educator. Raised in York, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Lebanon Valley College with a Bachelor of Music Education and from the University of Michigan with a Master of Music in choral conducting. In August 1980 he played an instrumental role in founding the New York City Gay Men's Chorus (NYCGMC). He served as the NYCGMC's first director from 1980 to 1998. He later returned as director for one season in 2005. During his tenure the chorus notably became the first gay musical ensemble to receive a recording contract. He also commissioned 40 new choral works by numerous notable American composers. Under his baton, the chorus performed more than 50 concerts in Carnegie Hall and completed three European tours.

Under Miller's leadership the NYCGMC operated not only as a musical ensemble but as a political and social organization. In a 2005 interview in The New York Times Miller said of the chorus, "As gay men we wanted to make music for the education and enrichment of the community. It was to be equal parts music, social and political." In 1984 the chorus performed at the Eastern Division Conference of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). It was the first time that the ACDA had featured a gay chorus at one of its conventions. The ACDA had initially refused to allow the chorus to use the word gay in their printed program; a decision which prompted Miller to file a successful lawsuit against the organization with the backing of the American Civil Liberties Union. He also led the chorus in several AIDS benefits which helped raise awareness of the disease as well as bring in funding for medical research.

Gary Miller (singer)

Gary Miller, born Neville Williams (1924 – 15 June 1968) was an English popular music singer and actor of the 1950s and 1960s. His career spanned only 13 years before he died of a heart attack in 1968. He released 24 singles and six EPs on the Pye label between 1955 and 1967. Pye released a further compilation EP after his death.

Career

Miller had several Top 40 singles early in his career, his debut single, "The Yellow Rose of Texas" reaching #13 on the UK Singles Chart. The most successful was "Robin Hood" (the theme to The Adventures of Robin Hood) which spent 28 weeks in the chart and peaked at #10, his only Top 10 hit.

Miller had a number of small acting roles in the television series The Saint and Gideon's Way, and was a regular panelist on Juke Box Jury. He provided the singing voice for Troy Tempest in the Gerry Anderson series Stingray and recorded "Aqua Marina", the end titles theme for the series. He also recorded vocals for two different versions of an ultimately-unused end titles theme for Thunderbirds. The song was later re-worked as "Flying High" for the episode Ricochet; one of the original two versions appears on the Thunderbirds 2 compilation album.

Gary Miller (computer scientist)

Gary Lee Miller is a professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, United States. In 2003 he won the ACM Paris Kanellakis Award (with three others) for the Miller–Rabin primality test. He was made an ACM Fellow in 2002 and won the Knuth Prize in 2013.

Miller received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975 under the direction of Manuel Blum. His Ph.D. thesis was titled Riemann's Hypothesis and Tests for Primality.

Apart from computational number theory and primality testing, he has worked in the areas of computational geometry, scientific computing, parallel algorithms and randomized algorithms. Among his Ph.D. students are Susan Landau, F. Thomson Leighton, Shang-Hua Teng, and Jonathan Shewchuk.
