Gala potato

'Gala' is an early-ripening firm-fleshed edible potato, for which good eating and keeping qualities are claimed. It was developed by the Groß Lüsewitz-based plant breeder Norika. In 2010, it was chosen as Thuringia's potato of the year in a public contest to which nearly 1000 consumers contributed, and in which 'Laura' was second place.

Tuber properties

The potato has typically a roughly oval form with shallow eyes which makes it particularly suitable for mechanical peeling. Yield per plant is relatively high, but a good water supply is vital. When cooked, the tuber suffers from only very minor discoloring.

Planting

Planting, using chitted seed potatoes, can be done at a depth some 2 cm deeper than normal since the plants are compact and easily lifted. To support irrigation requirements and nutritional qualities, the 'Gala' is also suitable for cultivation in relatively light soils. A protective dressing to counter Rhizoctonia is recommended.

    Biography

    Early life

Named by her parents after Salvador Dalí and Paul Eluard's muse, Gala Dali, Gala left Italy at 17 to attend art school in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1993 she moved to New York where she graduated from the Tisch School of the Arts and became a photographer capturing the New York underground scene of artists and club-goers in the city.

    1996–2001: early music career

In exchange of a photo for a European DJ, Gala recorded her first demo. "Freed From Desire" was written in New York and then mailed overseas on a cassette tape. It was recorded in London and was released by Italian independent label Do It Yourself Records.

    Gala (apple)

'Gala' is a clonally propagated apple cultivar with a mild and sweet flavor. 'Gala' apples ranked at number 2 in 2006 on the US Apple Association's list of most popular apples, after 'Red Delicious' and before 'Golden Delicious', 'Granny Smith', and 'Fuji' (in order). The skin color of the fruit is non-uniform.

    Appearance and flavor

Gala apples are vertically striped or mottled, overall orange in colour. Gala apples are sweet, fine textured, and aromatic, and can be added to salads or cooked, and are especially suitable for creating sauces.

    History

The first Gala apple tree was one of many seedlings resulting from a cross between a Golden Delicious and a Kidd's Orange Red planted in New Zealand in the 1930s by orchardist J.H. Kidd. Donald W. McKenzie, an employee of Stark Bros Nursery, obtained a US plant patent for the cultivar on October 15, 1974. It is a relatively new introduction to the UK, first planted in commercial volumes during the 1980s. The variety now represents about 20% of the total volume of the commercial production of eating apples grown in the UK, often replacing Cox's Orange Pippin.

    Potato

The potato is a starchy, tuberous crop from the perennial nightshade Solanum tuberosum L. The word "potato" may refer either to the plant itself or to the edible tuber. In the Andes, where the species is indigenous, there are some other closely related cultivated potato species. Potatoes were introduced outside the Andes region approximately four centuries ago, and have since become an integral part of much of the world's food supply. It is the world's fourth-largest food crop, following maize, wheat, and rice. The green leaves and green skins of tubers exposed to the light are toxic.

Wild potato species can be found throughout the Americas from the United States to southern Chile. The potato was originally believed to have been domesticated independently in multiple locations, but later genetic testing of the wide variety of cultivars and wild species proved a single origin for potatoes in the area of present-day southern Peru and extreme northwestern Bolivia (from a species in the Solanum brevicaule complex), where they were domesticated approximately 7,000–10,000 years ago. Following centuries of selective breeding, there are now over a thousand different types of potatoes. Over 99% of the presently cultivated potatoes worldwide descended from varieties that originated in the lowlands of south-central Chile, which have displaced formerly popular varieties from the Andes.

    List of Air characters

This is a list of characters from the Japanese visual novel, manga, and anime series Air. The protagonist of the story is Yukito Kunisaki, a wandering showman traveling across Japan in order to find the "girl in the sky". He has a straightforward attitude about life, and is determined to finish the journey he and his mother traveled together before she died. There are three heroines in the story, starting with Misuzu Kamio, who is the main heroine. Misuzu is an immature high school girl who approaches Yukito after they first meet and asked him to be her friend so they could play together. She often has dreams about flying in the sky, and loves to gaze into the sky at sunset at the beach. The second heroine is Kano Kirishima, a girl Misuzu's age who goes to the same school, but is in a different class. She has a yellow ribbon tied to her right wrist and was told when she was younger that after she grows up, she will be able to remove the ribbon and will have to power to use magic. The third heroine is a quiet girl named Minagi Tohno, who is in the same class as Misuzu. She loves astronomy, and hangs out with her younger friend Michiru constantly.

    Potato (Blackadder)

"Potato" is the third episode of the BBC sitcom Blackadder II, the second series of Blackadder, which was set in Elizabethan England from 1558 to 1603.

    Plot

The episode opens with Blackadder at home, preparing to go to court to celebrate the return of Sir Walter "Oooh what a big ship I've got" Raleigh (Simon Jones). Blackadder is typically sarcastic and embittered, refusing to join in the festivities and endures much taunting from children, to which he retaliates by shooting one with an arrow.

Melchett arrives and offers Blackadder a potato, the last having just been discovered by Raleigh on his voyages; Melchett plans to smoke his. Blackadder declines, scoffing that "people will be eating them next." At the court, Raleigh's tales of discovery greatly impress the Queen. Blackadder attempts to upstage him by declaring his intention to circumnavigate the Cape of Good Hope, a journey Raleigh believes is impossible, stating that sailors do not count it as part of the "Seven Seas" owing to its treacherousness. Blackadder enquires of Raleigh which sailor would be insane enough to Captain such a voyage, and is told where to find Captain Redbeard Rum.

In hopes that they’d pass by
Those imperfections that humble you ever time
I bet there’s times when I make you mad
Make you loose your cool just a tad
Even worse, bet there’s times when I make you sad
    CHORUS
    We all make little mistakes
    Moments we can’t erase
    Good intentions amusingly misplaced
    They’re in our recollections
    They color our connection- everyday
    Those little imperfections
    Are perfectly fine
    VERSE
    You left something behind
That put your day in a bind
Wishing hard you could grab the remote and rewind
    You’re Human and your mine
    You’re beauty and divine
You're more than I could ever hope to find
    CHORUS
    We all make little mistakes
    Moments we can’t erase
    Good intentions amusingly misplaced
    They’re in our recollections
    They color our connection- everyday
    Those little imperfections
    BRIDGE
They keep us slipping and stumbling around
But they keep us anchored close to the ground
It’s these little things we do
    Mostly we haven’t a clue
They're part of what made me fall for you
    CHORUS
    We all make little mistakes
    Moments we can’t erase
    Good intentions amusingly misplaced
    It's all our misdirection
    To me its pure perfection
When said and done those little imperfections
    Are yours and mine
