GNU nano

nano is a text editor for Unix-like computing systems or operating environments using a command line interface. It emulates the Pico text editor, part of the Pine email client, and also provides additional functionality. In contrast to Pico, nano is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Released as free software by Chris Allegretta in 1999, today nano is part of the GNU Project.

History

nano was first created in 1999 with the name TIP (This Isn't Pico), by Chris Allegretta. His motivation was to create a free software replacement for Pico, which was not distributed under a free software license. The name was changed to nano on January 10, 2000 to avoid a naming conflict with the existing Unix utility tip. The name comes from the system of SI prefixes, in which nano is 1000 times larger than pico. In February 2001, nano became a part of the GNU Project.

nano implements some features that Pico lacks, including colored text, regular expression search and replace, smooth scrolling, multiple buffers, rebindable key support, and undoing and redoing of edit changes.

Nano- (symbol n) is a unit prefix meaning one billionth. Used primarily with the metric system, this prefix denotes a factor of 10⁻⁹ or 0.000000001. It is frequently encountered in science and electronics for prefixing units of time and length.

Nano (Spanish footballer, born 1982)

Fernando Macedo da Silva Rodilla (born 20 April 1982), known as Nano, is a Spanish professional footballer who plays for Racing de Ferrol mainly as a left winger.

He started out at FC Barcelona but, after only six competitive appearances with the first team, he went on to resume his career in both Segunda División and Segunda División B. In La Liga, he also represented Atlético Madrid, Getafe and Osasuna, amassing totals of 69 games and eight goals.

Club career

Nano was born in A Coruña, Galicia. At age 16, he seemed on the verge of a promising future as he was already playing with FC Barcelona's reserves, and the following year he made his first-team – and La Liga – debut, against Real Zaragoza; he would however, not be able to progress any further in his five-year stay with the Catalans, only appearing in three more games with the main squad.

After a solid first season with Atlético Madrid, with qualification to the UEFA Cup, Nano's career faded into obscurity as he was rarely featured with another club from Madrid, Getafe CF, and slightly more with Cádiz CF (the latter in the second division).

9965 GNU is a C-type main belt asteroid. It orbits the Sun once every 3.76 years.

Discovered on March 5, 1992 by Spacewatch, it was given the provisional designation "1992 EF₂". It was later renamed "GNU" after the GNU project.

GNU ⁱ/ɡnuː/ is an operating system project and an extensive collection of computer software. GNU is composed wholly of free software.

GNU is a recursive acronym for "GNU's Not Unix!", chosen because GNU's design is Unix-like, but differs from Unix by being free software and containing no Unix code. The GNU project includes an operating system kernel, GNU HURD, which was the original focus of the Free Software Foundation (FSF). However, non-GNU kernels, most famously the Linux kernel, can also be used with GNU software; and since the kernel is the least mature part of GNU, this is how it is usually used. The combination of GNU software and the Linux kernel is commonly known as Linux (or less frequently GNU/Linux; see GNU/Linux naming controversy).

GNU is still missing some components to make it a full operating system that a person can readily install and use on a computer, specifically a fully functioning kernel. In practice, most usable GNU-based operating systems are Linux distributions. They contain the Linux kernel, GNU components and software from many other free software projects.
