Gazelle

A gazelle is any of many antelope species in the genus Gazella or formerly considered to belong to it. Six species are included in two genera, Eudorcas and Nanger, which were formerly considered subgenera. The genus Procapra has also been considered a subgenus of Gazella, and its members are also referred to as gazelles, though they are not dealt with in this article.

Gazelles are known as swift animals. Some are able to run at bursts as high as 100 km/h (60 mph) or run at a sustained speed of 50 km/h (30 mph). Gazelles are found mostly in the deserts, grasslands, and savannas of Africa; but they are also found in southwest and central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. They tend to live in herds, and eat less coarse, easily digestible plants and leaves.

Gazelles are rather small antelopes, most standing 60–110 cm (2–3.5 ft) high at the shoulder, and are generally fawn-colored.

The gazelle genera are Gazella, Educratria, and Nanger. The taxonomy of these genera is a confused one, and the classification of species and subspecies has been an unsettled issue. Currently, the genus Gazella is widely considered to contain about 13 species. Four further species are extinct: the red gazelle, the Arabian gazelle, the Queen of Sheba's gazelle, and the Saudi gazelle. Most surviving gazelle species are considered threatened to varying degrees. Closely related to the true gazelles are the Tibetan and Mongolian gazelles (species of the genus Procapra), the blackbuck of Asia, and the African springbok.

Gazelle first appeared in Fantastic Four vol. 1 #186 (September 1977), and was created by Len Wein and George Pérez.

The character subsequently appears in Fantastic Four Annual #14 (1979), Fantastic Four #223 (October 1980), The Vision and the Scarlet Witch #3 (December 1985), The Avengers 2000 Annual, Marvel Knights: 4 #25-27 (February–April 2006), and Four #30 (August 2006).

Gazelle appeared as part of the "Salem's Seven" entry in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Deluxe Edition #19.

Fictional character biography

Gazelle is a daughter of Nicholas Scratch and is a member of Salem's Seven.

Wizard reformed the Frightful Four using Gazelle, Reptilla, and Vertigo of Salem's Seven, and they attacked Chicago to get the attention of Mister Fantastic. Mister Fantastic was almost defeated by the Frightful Four until Scarlet Witch appeared to help him.

Salem's Seven are a fictional team of magical beings and former supervillains appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. They were initially foes of the Scarlet Witch and the Fantastic Four, but in more recent years, they have become allies to both. All seven are the children of Nicholas Scratch and the grandchildren of Agatha Harkness. They are humans with magic powers who can transform into fantastic creatures with super-powers.
