G. M. Durrani

Ghulam Mustafa Durrani, often abbreviated as G. M. Durrani (1919 – 8 September 1988) (Hindi: ग़ुलाम मुस्तफ़ा दुर्रानी, Urdu: درانى مصطفى غلام‎, Pashto: دراني مصطفی غلام‎, Punjabi: ਗੁਲਾਮ ਮੁਸਤਫਾ ਦੁੱਰਾਨੀ) was a popular and legendaryIndian Radio Drama Artist, playback singer, actor and music director.

To his credit, He tried to make his own identity as a playback singer and not try to follow the K. L. Saigal type of singing. G. M. Durrani was notable for Sad songs, Romantic songs, Patriotic songs, Quraan Khani, Qawwalis, Ghazals and Bhajans. He was also one of the first Muslim singers to get to sing Hindu Devotionals. G. M. Durrani was also the most senior Punjabi singer-actor at that time.

He was Radio Drama Artist and full-time Singer of Lahore station, Delhi station and Mumbai station of AIR (Akashvani (radio broadcaster)). His native language was Pashto but he had a strong command over Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi. He sang in many Indian languages including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Pashto language in Indian movies in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. After the 50s Durrani sang very few songs. Durrani was the disciple of radio broadcaster Zulfiqar Ali Bukhari.

Gümüş (Turkish for "Silver") is a Turkish melodrama originally broadcast in Turkey by Kanal D from 2005 to 2007. The sudser became a pop-culture phenomenon when it dubbed in Arabic language and aired across the Arab world as "Noor" (Arabic for "light") in 2008. The show which MBC execs dubbed from Turkish into Arabic using a colloquial Syrian dialect rather than formal, classical Arabic, followed the travails of a simple young woman "Gümüş," played by Songül Öden, who marries into a wealthy family.

The success of "Noor" for MBC has sparked a boom in dubbed Turkish dramas across many leading Arab sat-casters. MBC even launched a pay TV channel in partnership with pay TV platform Showtime Arabia entirely dedicated to "Noor" that allows viewers to watch episodes of the sudser around the clock.

The dizzying pop-cultural phenomenon surrounding the series has encouraged the broadcaster further to make a film out of the Turkish soap. The feature version, which MBC will co-produce with Turkish shingle Momentum Prods., will have a budget in the $2.5 million-3.5 million range and will also be shot in Turkish before being dubbed into Arabic. The project will reunite Turkish thespians Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ and Songül Öden, who captured the hearts of Arab audiences in their husband-and-wife roles of Muhannad and Noor, respectively.

Durrani

Durrani (Pashto: دراني‎) or Abdali (Pashto: ابدالی‎) is the name of a chief Sarbani Pashtun tribal confederation in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Originally known by their ancient name Abdali, which may derive from the more ancient Ebodalo (Bactrian: ηβοδαλο / "Hephthalites"), they have been called Durrani since the beginning of the Durrani Empire in 1747. The number of Durranis are estimated to be roughly 16% of the population of Afghanistan or 5 million individuals. Durrani are found throughout Afghanistan and Pakistan; although large concentrations are found in southern Afghanistan, they are also found to a lesser extent in east, west and central Afghanistan. Many Durranis are found in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces of Pakistan. The Durrani Pashtuns of the Afghan capital Kabul are usually bilingual in Pashto and Dari Persian. The ruling Sadozai and Barakzai dynasties of Afghanistan were originally from the Durrani.

History

They were known in the past as Abdalis, from approximately the 7th century until the mid-18th century when Ahmad Shah Durrani was chosen as the new Emir and the Durrani Empire was established. One of Ahmad Shah's first acts as Emir was to adopt the title padshah durr-i durran ('King, "pearl of the age"). He united the Pashtun tribes following a loya jirga in western Kandahar and changed his own name from Ahmad Shah Abdali to Ahmad Shah Durrani. Since that period, the kings of Afghanistan have been of Durrani extraction.
