Future tense

In grammar, a future tense is a verb form that generally marks the event described by the verb as not having happened yet, but expected to happen in the future. An example of a future tense form is the French aimera, meaning "will love", derived from the verb aimer ("love"). English does not have a future tense formed by verb inflection in this way, although it has a number of ways to express the future, particularly the construction with the auxiliary verb will or shall or is/am/are going to and grammarians differ in whether they describe such constructions as representing a future tense in English.

The "future" expressed by the future tense usually means the future relative to the moment of speaking, although in contexts where relative tense is used it may mean the future relative to some other point in time under consideration. Future tense can be denoted by the glossing abbreviation FUT.

Expressions

The nature of the future, necessarily uncertain and at varying distances ahead, means that the speaker may refer to future events with the modality either of probability (what the speaker expects to happen) or intent (what the speaker plans to make happen). Whether future expression is realis or irrealis depends not so much on an objective ontological notion of future reality, but rather on the degree of the speaker's conviction that the event will in fact come about.

Future Tense (American radio show)

Future Tense is a short American radio program focusing on technology news. It is presented by John Moe and produced by Larissa Anderson for Minnesota Public Radio (MPR). The show is distributed by American Public Media and was hosted from 1996 to 2010 by Jon Gordon.

History

In February 2010, MPR announced that Jon Gordon would take the role of social media/mobile editor at the network, and that John Moe would take over the show. Moe's first broadcast was 3 May 2010. In September 2010, it was announced that Future Tense would become Marketplace Tech Report.

Broadcast

Future Tense airs weekdays and runs for approximately five minutes. The program first aired in March 1996. It has been podcast since 2004 and archives of the show are available online. It can be heard on Minnesota Public Radio stations at 8:20 AM, as well as part of U.S. broadcasts of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation show As It Happens.

Future Tense (Star Trek: Enterprise)

"Future Tense" is the forty-second episode (production #216) of the television series Star Trek: Enterprise, the sixteenth of the second season.

The Enterprise finds a derelict ship, apparently from the future, and is attacked by Suliban, and later Tholian, ships seeking its possession.

Plot

The discovery of a derelict pod with a long-dead "human" pilot opens up a mystery. Some of the crew speculate he is the first human to invent warp drive technology, Zefram Cochrane, but DNA profiling reveal the remains are not his. Commander Tucker and Lieutenant Reed examine the mysterious pod and discover, via a floor panel, that it is spatially larger than physically possible. They also recover a device from the core which still has a weak energy signature. Shortly afterwards, a Suliban ship arrives and claims salvage rights, but Captain Archer refuses to yield it without explanation. They open fire, and beam in a boarding party, but are finally repelled.

Undaunted, Enterprise then sets course to rendezvous with Tal'Kir, a Vulcan ship. Doctor Phlox's scans reveal the dead pilot has multi-generational DNA fragments from several other alien species including Vulcan, Terrelian, and Rigelian. Seeking answers, Archer and Sub-Commander T'Pol enter Agent Daniels' cabin, and they learn that the pod is a time travel vessel from the 31st century. Meanwhile, Tucker and Reed, on returning to the pod, get stuck in a recurring time-loop. This heightens T'Pol's concerns and she discusses the situation with Archer, who feels they must have more information on the Temporal Cold War.

Future Tense is the 12th studio album & 15th album overall by Christian parody band ApologetiX. The album is their 1st without long-time lead guitarist & producer Karl Messner, who left in September 2007 to focus on his family.
