Frontier (horse)

Frontier (foaled 1896) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse who won the Dewhurst Plate as a two-year-old and the Ascot Derby as a three-year-old. He was owned by the Hugh Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster and trained by John Porter at Kingsclere.

Background

Frontier was a chestnut colt bred by the 1st Duke of Westminster and foaled in 1896. He was the son of dual Eclipse Stakes winner Orme, who was Champion sire in Britain in 1899. Amongst Orme's other progeny were Triple Crown winner Flying Fox, Derby winner Orby and 1000 Guineas winner Witch Elm. Frontier's dam was Quetta, a daughter of Bend Or who also produced the City and Suburban Handicap winner Grey Leg and Coronation Stakes winner Helm.

Racing career

As a two-year-old Frontier ran in the National Breeders' Produce Stakes over five furlongs at Sandown. Ridden by Morny Cannon he finished unplaced. He started at the odds of 100/15 for the Dewhurst Plate, again being ridden by Morny Cannon. After the start Frontier was on his own of the far side of the track and as the horses neared the finish he and Caiman, the 11/8 favourite, came away from the field. At the finish Frontier just held on to win by a head from Caiman, with the two clear of Vara in third place.

Horse

The horse (Equus ferus caballus) is one of two extant subspecies of Equus ferus. It is an odd-toed ungulate mammal belonging to the taxonomic family Equidae. The horse has evolved over the past 45 to 55 million years from a small multi-toed creature, Hyracotherium, into the large, single-toed animal of today. Humans began to domesticate horses around 4000 BC, and their domestication is believed to have been widespread by 3000 BC. Horses in the subspecies caballus are domesticated, although some domesticated populations live in the wild as feral horses. These feral populations are not true wild horses, as this term is used to describe horses that have never been domesticated, such as the endangered Przewalski's horse, a separate subspecies, and the only remaining true wild horse. There is an extensive, specialized vocabulary used to describe equine-related concepts, covering everything from anatomy to life stages, size, colors, markings, breeds, locomotion, and behavior.

Horses' anatomy enables them to make use of speed to escape predators and they have a well-developed sense of balance and a strong fight-or-flight response. Related to this need to flee from predators in the wild is an unusual trait: horses are able to sleep both standing up and lying down. Female horses, called mares, carry their young for approximately 11 months, and a young horse, called a foal, can stand and run shortly following birth. Most domesticated horses begin training under saddle or in harness between the ages of two and four. They reach full adult development by age five, and have an average lifespan of between 25 and 30 years.

Horse (1941 film)

Uma (馬, also known as Horse) is a 1941 black-and-white Japanese film directed by Kajiro Yamamoto and starring Hideko Takamine, whom Yamamoto had directed in his film Composition Class (Tsuzurikata Kyōshitsu) three years before. Uma was actually completed by assistant director Akira Kurosawa. It follows the story of Ine Onoda, the eldest daughter of a poor family of farmers, who raises a colt from birth and comes to love the horse dearly. When the horse is grown, the government orders it auctioned and sold to the army. Ine struggles to prevent the sale.

Overview

The film is a tale about a young girl and the colt she raises from its birth. But it is also about the struggle of farmers existing on the edge of poverty. Akira Kurosawa is credited as the film's production coordinator, which is equivalent to first assistant director. But Kurosawa's signature is all over this work and is the last film he was to work on as an assistant before starting his own directing career. The film took three years to plan and a year to film. Kajiro Yamamoto had to commute to the far mountainous location but had to turn his attention to his money making comedies in Tokyo and so he left production in the hands of his assistant, Kurosawa.

Horse (zodiac)

The Horse (馬 午) is one of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar. There is a long tradition of the horse in Chinese mythology. Certain characteristics of the Horse nature are supposed to be typical of or to be associated with either a year of the Horse and its events, or in regard to the personality of someone born in such a year. Frontier

A frontier is the political and geographical areas near or beyond a boundary. The term came from French in the 15th century, with the meaning "borderland"—the region of a country that fronts on another country (see also marches).

The word "frontier" also means a region at the edge of a settled area, especially in North American development. It is a transition zone where explorers, pioneers and settlers were arriving. That is, as pioneers moved into the "frontier zone", they were changed by the encounter. A frontier can also be referred to as a "front".

That is what Frederick Jackson Turner calls "the significance of the frontier." For example, Turner argues that, in United States' 1893, one change was that unlimited free land in this zone was available, and thus offered the psychological sense of unlimited opportunity. This, in turn, had many consequences such as optimism, future orientation, shedding of restraints due to land scarcity, and wastefulness of natural resources.

Frontier (2016 TV series)

Frontier is an upcoming Canadian historical drama television series. Co-created by Brad Peyton, Rob Blackie and Peter Blackieand, Frontier will chronicle the North American fur trade of the 1800s.

The series will air domestically on Discovery Channel as its first original scripted production, and was acquired by Netflix for international distribution.

Jason Mamoa will star, joined by Alun Armstrong, Allan Hawco, Landon Liboiron, and Jessica Matten. Hawco had participated in Peyton's previous series, Republic of Doyle.

Broadcast

Frontier will premiere on Discovery Channel Canada in 2016, with a six-episode order for season 1; it marks the channel's first original scripted commission. In November 2015, Netflix acquired digital rights to the series outside of Canada. Per the agreement, it will not appear on Netflix in Canada until 2018. The series will be produced in 4K ultra high definition; on January 8, 2016, Bell Media confirmed that Frontier would stream in 4K via the Discovery Go app for Samsung 4K smart TVs.

Frontier (grid computing platform)

Frontier is the central computing platform of Parabon Computation, Inc. When it was released in 2000, it was the only commercially available platform of its kind. Frontier powers both public and private networks, and boasts affiliations with two of the largest public grids: the Global Grid Exchange and the Compute Against Cancer network.
