Fred Thompson

Fred Dalton Thompson (born Freddie Dalton Thompson; August 19, 1942 – November 1, 2015) was an American politician, actor, attorney, lobbyist, columnist, and radio host. Thompson, a Republican, served in the United States Senate representing Tennessee from 1994 to 2003.

Thompson served as chairman of the International Security Advisory Board at the United States Department of State, was a member of the U.S.–China Economic and Security Review Commission, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and was a Visiting Fellow with the American Enterprise Institute, specializing in national security and intelligence.

As an actor, Thompson appeared in a number of movies and television shows as well as in commercials. He frequently portrayed governmental figures. In the final months of his U.S. Senate term in 2002, Thompson joined the cast of the long-running NBC television series Law & Order, playing Manhattan District Attorney Arthur Branch.

Early life and education

Thompson was born in Sheffield, Alabama on August 19, 1942, the son of Ruth Inez (née Bradley) and Fletcher Session Thompson (born Lauderdale County, Alabama, August 26, 1919, died Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, May 27, 1990), who was an automobile salesman. He attended public school in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, graduating from Lawrence County High School, where he played high school football. Thereafter, he worked days in the local post office, and nights at the Murray bicycle assembly plant.

Frederick A. Thompson, usually credited as Fred Thompson (24 January 1884 – 10 April 1949) was an English writer, best known as a librettist for about fifty British and American musical comedies in the first half of the 20th century. Among the writers with whom he collaborated were George Grossmith Jr., P. G. Wodehouse, Guy Bolton and Ira Gershwin. Composers with whom he worked included Lionel Monckton, Ivor Novello and George Gershwin.

Many of Thompson's shows became popular hits, including To-night's the Night (1914), The Bing Boys are Here (1916), The Boy (1917), Lady, Be Good! (1924), Rio Rita (1927), Funny Face (1927) and Follow the Girls (1944).

Biography

Thompson was born in London and raised in Newton Abbot, Devon, in the west of England. He attended the Slade School of Fine Art in London and trained as an architect. He was a skilled caricaturist, and in the early years of the 20th century he contributed regular theatrical caricatures to at least three London newspapers. He worked for three years as an actor, giving him an inside view of stagecraft, which he later put to use in his writing.

Fred Thompson (footballer)

Frederick "Fred" Thompson (c.1873 − 1958) was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper in the Football League around the turn of the 19th century. Playing for Bury, he was an FA Cup winner in 1900.

Playing career

Born in South Hetton in the north east of England, Thompson first played for Sunderland in the 1895−1896 season. This was Sunderlands most successful period in their history having won the top tier of the Football League 3 times out of the previous 4, being runners up in the other year. In the season he played they finished 5th. During that season, all other players in the squad apart from Thompson were Scottish, so his two appearances in the side were the only appearances of an English player.

He went to Bury, playing with them when they won the FA Cup final at Crystal Palace in 1900.

He later played for several other clubs including Bolton Wanderers, Luton Town, Portsmouth,Fulham, Norwich City, Doncaster Rovers, and Denaby United and Brodsworth Main.

Fred Thompson (rugby union)

Frederick Herbert Thompson (1890–1915) was an Australian national representative rugby union player and soldier who fell in the Great War.

Born in Maroubra, New South Wales to Henry and Dorothy Thompson, Fred Thompson played at number eight with the Eastern Suburbs RUFC. His international debut was made during the Wallabies 1913 tour of New Zealand captained by Larry Dwyer. Thompson played in all three Tests of the tour. In 1914 the All Blacks came to Australia and again Thompson played in all three Tests, twice as number 8 and once at flanker. His rugby career ended with the start of World War I with a tally of six international rugby caps for Australia.

He enlisted in Sydney in the AIF in January 1915 six months after war was declared, citing his occupation as carpenter. He embarked as a Private with the 13th Battalion (3rd reinforcement) from Sydney on 11 February 1915 on board the HMAT A49 Seang Choon. He saw active service at Gallipoli and was there killed in action on 29 May 1915. He is buried in the Shrapnel Valley Cemetery at Gallipoli.

Fred Thompson (rower)

Frederick "Fred" or "Rangi" Houghton Thompson (30 March 1910 – 15 December 1971) was a New Zealand rower.

Born in Christchurch, Thompson won the silver medal in the coxless pair at the 1932 Summer Olympics partnering Cyril Stiles. As a crew member of the New Zealand boat Thompson was eliminated in the repêchage of the eights competition.

He also won two medals in the eights at the Empire Games, silver in 1930 at Hamilton and bronze in 1938 at Sydney.
