Fred Lewis

Frederick Deshaun Lewis (born December 9, 1980) is an American professional baseball outfielder, who is currently with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. He made his debut on September 1, 2006, with the San Francisco Giants. He is the cousin of former Major League outfielder Matt Lawton. He lived in Chatham, New Jersey for a brief time before moving to Toronto.

High school and college

Lewis graduated from Stone High School in Wiggins, Mississippi in 1999, where he was a three sport star in basketball, football, and baseball. He went on to attend Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, where he played both football and baseball.

After graduating in 2001, he was drafted in the 20th round (585th overall) by the Montreal Expos, but opted not to sign, instead attending Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to play baseball. While attending Southern University, Lewis flipped a truck he was driving on a rainy night, and three of the occupants in the car were killed.

Fred Lewis (born 1947) is an American former handball player.

Lewis is Jewish, and was born in The Bronx, New York. Both of his parents played handball, and he learned to play the game outdoors in the Bronx. He initially played one-wall handball, and entered his first tournament at the age of eight. He competed on his high school swimming team.

He received a master’s degree in education at the University of Miami in 1972. He won two U.S. National Collegiate Singles Championships.

Lewis is a six-time U.S. Handball Association National Four-Wall Handball Singles Champion (1972, 1974–76, 1978, and 1981). He is also a three-time National Three-Wall Singles Champion (1974, 1977, and 1978). He was named 1970s "Handball Player of the Decade" by the National Handball Association.

He made the finals of the National Open championship 14 consecutive years. He won 16 titles as a professional.

In 1998, he created Yes2Kids, a handball club for children. In 2003, he was head coach of the handball team at the University of Arizona. In 2008, he remarried his ex-wife, as they had reconciled after 16 years.

Fred Lewis (basketball coach)

Frederick B. Lewis (January 6, 1921 – December 27, 1994) was the head basketball coach at Syracuse University from 1962 to 1968. He compiled a 91-57 (.615) record during his tenure. He took his team to the National Invitation Tournament, two years after the team finished the season with a record of 2-22. Prior to coaching at Syracuse, he coached at Southern Mississippi University, where he compiled an 89-38 record. He coached at Amityville High School, where he compiled a 63-40 record from 1950 to 1953. He also coached at the University of Hawaii, where he compiled a record of 21-2.

One of his teams almost became the first team in NCAA history to average 100 or more points per game. Lewis's 1965-66 team, led by Dave Bing, participated in the NCAA Tournament and won against Davidson College in the first round before Syracuse lost to Duke University. He died in Sacramento, California, in 1994.

Owen was born in Stoke-upon-Trent and played for West Bromwich Albion before joining Stoke in 1909. He played in two matches during the 1909–10 season before entering amateur football with Cradley St Lukes, Dudley Town and Brierley Hill Alliance.

Frederick Miller Lewis (October 13, 1858 – June 5, 1945) was a 19th-century professional baseball outfielder. Lewis played for six seasons from 1881 to 1886 for the Boston Red Caps, Philadelphia Quakers, St. Louis Browns, St. Louis Maroons, and Cincinnati Red Stockings.

Lewis (lifting appliance)

A lewis (sometimes called a lewisson) is one of a category of lifting devices used by stonemasons to lift large stones into place with a crane, chain block, or winch. It is inserted into a specially prepared hole, or seating, in the top of a stone, directly above its centre of mass. It works by applying principles of the lever and utilises the weight of the stone to act on the long lever-arms which in turn results in a very high reaction force and friction where the short lever-arms make contact with the stone inside the hole and thereby prevents slipping.

Etymology

The name lewis may come from the Latin levo -avi, -atum meaning to levitate or lift, but the Oxford English Dictionary Online states, "the formation and the phonology are not easily explained on this hypothesis", preferring "origin obscure", and speculating that the term may derive from a personal name. The Romans used the lewis. The specially shaped hole that is shaped to fit the device is known as a lewis hole. Lewis holes in the uppermost masonry coursings are neatly repaired with matching indented plugs after the stone has been set in place.
