Frank Scully

Frank Scully (born Francis Joseph Xavier Scully; 28 April 1892 – 23 June 1964) was an American journalist, author, humorist, and a regular columnist for the entertainment trade magazine Variety.

Involvement with Newton and "Dr. Gee"

In October and November 1949, Scully published two columns in Variety, claiming that dead extraterrestrial beings were recovered from a flying saucer crash, based on what he said was reported to him by a scientist involved. His 1950 book Behind the Flying Saucers expanded on the theme, adding that there had been two such incidents in Arizona and one in New Mexico, a 1948 incident that involved a saucer that was nearly 100 feet (30 m) in diameter. The saucers supposedly worked on magnetic principles. In the book, Scully revealed his two sources to be Silas M. Newton and a scientist he called "Dr. Gee." Sixty thousand copies of the book were sold. Scully was known for his idiosyncratic prose, describing Dr. Gee as having "more degrees than a thermometer" and an alleged crashed saucer in the Sahara as "more cracked than a psychiatrist in an auto wreck."

Frank Scully (footballer)

Francis "Frank" Scully (28 October 1899 – 5 May 1980) was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL).

Career

Scully, a recruit from Windsor, started his St Kilda career in the 1924 VFL season. Debuting in round five, Scully was a regular fixture in the team for the rest of the year and won St Kilda's "best first-year player" award for his performances in 12 games. In round 17 he was reported for striking Essendon player Charlie May, for which he was suspended for five games.

He did not return the following season until round six and kicked three goals in his first game back, against Essendon. He played every game except the final two rounds, due to a shoulder injury.

His 1926 season was interrupted by an eight-week suspension, incurred for an incident in St Kilda's round two loss to Geelong at Junction Oval. The incident happened after Scully received a free kick for having his arm pulled by Geelong's Ken Leahy. According to the field umpire's account, Scully punched the ball away following the free kick, which struck Leahy in the face. The pair then exchanged blows and had to be separated by the boundary umpire. As Leahy was the first to strike, Scully's suspension was for "retaliation". The tribunal chairman believed Leahy was the aggressor, but as Scully was also charged with striking they could not take provocation into account. Leahy was also suspended for eight weeks.

Frank Scully (politician)

Francis Raymond Scully (27 January 1920 – 12 August 2015), Australian politician, from 1949 was a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly for the electoral district of Richmond representing the Australian Labor Party to March 1955. He was Assistant Minister of Lands, Assistant Minister of Electrical Undertakings in the third Cain government from 1952–1955. He was a member of the Catholic Social Studies Movement ("The Movement") in Victoria, and was expelled from the ministry and the ALP as part of the Australian Labor Party split of 1955. He then was a member of the Australian Labor Party (Anti-Communist) (and then the Democratic Labor Party) from 1955 to 1958. Scully was the only member of the DLP in the lower house of the Victorian parliament during these three years.

Scully was a railway worker, and was active in the Australian Railways Union Industrial Group. Scully was defeated at the 1958 elections and subsequently owned a news-agency in Sandringham, Victoria. He died in 2015 at the age of 95.
