Frank Lloyd

Frank William George Lloyd (2 February 1886 – 10 August 1960) was a Scottish-American film director, scriptwriter and producer. He was among the founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and was its president from 1934-35.

Lloyd was born in Glasgow, Scotland. His mother Jane was Scottish and his father Edmund was Welsh. He is Scotland's first Academy Award winner and is unique in film history, having received three Oscar nominations in 1929 for his work on a silent film (The Divine Lady), a part-talkie (Weary River) and a full talkie (Drag). He won for The Divine Lady. He was nominated and won again in 1933 for his adaptation of Noël Coward's Cavalcade and received a further Best Director nomination in 1935 for perhaps his most successful film, Mutiny on the Bounty.

Honors

Lloyd was nominated five times for the Academy Award for Best Directing, for Weary River (1929), The Divine Lady (1929), Drag (1929), Cavalcade (1933), and Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). He won for The Divine Lady and Cavalcade.

Frank Lloyd (horn player)

Frank Lloyd FRAM (1952 - ) is an English virtuoso horn player and teacher, Professor of Horn at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, Germany and formerly professor of horn at both the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Trinity College of Music in London.

Early life

Frank was born into a non-musical family in Cornwall, UK in 1952. Aged 13 he took up the trombone and joined his school brass band; on leaving school aged fifteen he joined the Royal Marines Band Service where he changed to the French horn. In 1975 he left the services to study at the Royal Academy of Music as a pupil of Ifor James. Within three months, however, he was offered the position of Principal Horn with the Scottish National Orchestra, now the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Career

He played with RSNO for four and a half years before returning to London and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he played for three years, leaving to fulfill ever-increasing demands for his services as a soloist and chamber-music player, also joining the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, Nash Ensemble and the English Chamber Orchestra as Principal Horn.

Frank Lloyd (actor)

Frank Lloyd (born 1929) is an Australian-born character actor, and showbiz entertainer, who is perhaps best known for his stint as Neville McPhee, an original character in the Australian soap Home And Away. Along with co-star Sheila Kennelly, who played his wife Floss, they were two of the 16 original cast members of the Australian television soap opera. In a career spanning more than fifty years, Lloyd appeared on radio, theatre, television and film. Lloyd's first roles stemmed from his after-school job as an office boy at 2GB, where he was sometimes asked to appear in radio plays. After finishing school, Lloyd travelled to England, and studied theatre. He appeared in the New York stage production of The Drunkard. His first film appearance was as an uncredited messenger in the 1956 film The Battle of the River Plate. He later played Mr Tinkle in Around the World in Eighty Days and featured in the Australian film, Those Dear Departed' 'and Fast Talking Lloyd is best known to Australian audiences for his appearances in television soap operas, working on The Young Doctors and Sons and Daughters. He appeared only a few times on film, and, with his work on soap operas providing some notable exceptions, his career on television was largely confined to guest star roles and minor telemovie appearances. However, he worked regularly in theatres throughout his career, with his last performance being a year-long role in a production of Guys and Dolls. Frank also had a guest role on Mother and Son, on the ABC, appeared on Prisoner and had several guest parts in A Country Practice.
