Frank Evers Beddard

Frank Evers Beddard FRS FRSE (19 June 1858 – 14 July 1925) was an English zoologist. He became a leading authority on annelids, including earthworms. He won the Linnean Medal in 1916 for his book on oligochaetes.

Life

Beddard was born in Dudley, Worcestershire the son of John Beddard. He was educated at Harrow and New College, Oxford. He died in Hampstead in London.

Career

Beddard was naturalist to the Challenger Expedition Commission from 1882 to 1884. In 1884 he was appointed prosector, responsible for preparing dissections of animals that had died, at the Zoological Society of London, following the death of William Alexander Forbes.

Beddard became lecturer in biology at Guy's Hospital, examiner in zoology and comparative anatomy at the University of London, and lecturer in morphology at Oxford University.

Apart from his publications on wide-ranging topics in zoology, such as Isopoda,Mammalia,ornithology,zoogeography and animal coloration, Beddard became particularly noted as an authority on the annelids, publishing two books on the group and contributing articles on earthworms, leeches and also on another phylum of worms, the Nematoda for the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica, where he used the initials "F.E.B.". Frank Evers (Gaelic footballer)

Francis Anthony 'Frank' Evers (born August 27, 1934) was a Gaelic footballer who played for the Galway county team in the 1950s and early 1960s. He played his last game for Galway in 1962.

Career

Evers was a native of Menlough, Galway. He started at the Senior National level in 1952, when he was only 18 years old. Called a "towering figure of a man" and a "marvellous Croke Park man" by his colleague Jack Mahon, he also formed a famous centrefield partnership with Mattie McDonagh. He played for Westmeath Seniors in the League of 1952-53 and transferred to his native County Galway in 1953. He won an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship with Galway in 1956, when Galway defeated Cork, and a Runners-up Shield in 1959, when Galway were defeated by Kerry in the '59 Final. He won six Connacht Senior Medals 1954 and 1956 - 1960,when he played in all five Connacht Finals. He was a member of Westmeath Minor team who won the 1952 Leinster Minor Championship, beaten in the All-Ireland Minor Football semi-final by Cavan. Frank's native County - Galway won the All Ireland Minor football Final in 1952.

Frank Evers is a cartoonist known for his editorial cartoons. He received the National Cartoonist Society Editorial Cartoon Award for 1979.
