Francis Gregory

Francis Hoyt Gregory (October 9, 1789 – October 4, 1866) was an officer in the United States Navy during the War of 1812 through to the Civil War, serving then as a Rear Admiral.

Early life; service during the War of 1812

Gregory was born in Norwalk, Connecticut, the son of Moses Gregory and Esther Hoyt. He was the third great-grandson of John Gregory, founding settler of Norwalk. While in the American merchant marine, he was impressed by the British in an incident typical of those which led in part to the War of 1812. After escaping, Gregory was appointed a midshipman on January 16, 1809, by President Jefferson and reported to the Revenge, commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry.

In March, 1809, Gregory was transferred to the Gulf Squadron at New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1811, while serving in the Vesuvius and as acting captain of Gun Boat 162, Gregory participated in three notable actions. On August 7, off Pensacola, Midshipman Gregory attacked and crippled the pirate schooner La Franchise. On August 10, off Mobile, he attached and captured the pirate schooner Santa Maria. On September 11, between Brassa and Barataria, Louisiana, midshipman Gregory and his crew captured the pirate ship La Divina, and the schooners La Sophie and Le Vengeance.

Francis Gregory (sportsman)

Francis Gregory (April→June 1904– death unknown) birth registered in Bodmin, was a Cornish wrestler of the 1920s and '30s, Cornish wrestling referee (stickler) of the 1960s, Professional boxer of the 1920s, rugby union footballer of the 1920s and '30s, playing club level rugby union (RU) for Redruth R.F.C., professional wrestler of the 1930s through to 1963, and professional rugby league footballer of the 1930s, playing representative level rugby league (RL) for England, and at club level for Wigan, and Warrington, as prop, or second-row, i.e. number 8 or 10, or, 11 or 12, during the era of contested scrums. Francis Gregory wrestled professionally under the name Francis St. Clair Gregory, his sobriquet of 'St. Clair' is purportedly the name of town in Brittany visited by Cornish wrestlers for wrestling tournaments.

Cornish wrestling career

Francis Gregory is considered the most notable Cornish Wrestler since the foundation of the Cornish Wrestling Association in 1923, and the last of the "Great" Cornish wrestlers, he was the youngest member of the squad that took part in a two-week-long exhibition to promote Cornish wrestling at the London Palladium in the 1920s, he represented Cornwall as heavyweight champion against Brittany at the first seven Cornu-Breton tournaments, winning on every occasion, including victories over the famous Breton champions; René Scordia, and Robert Cadic, he was known as "The Champion Who Never Smiled".

Francis Gregory (bishop)

The Rt RevFrancis Ambrose Gregory, DD, MA was a former Bishop of Mauritius.

Born into an ecclesiastical family in 1848 and educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, he was ordained in 1873 and began his career as a Curate in Cheam. After that he was a SPG Missionary in Madagascar. In time he became the Principal of St Paul’s College, Ambatoharanana and Chaplain to the Bishop. He was Bishop of Mauritius from 1904 to 1919.

He died on 31 January 1927.

Francis Gregory (divine)

Francis Gregory, D.D. (c.1625 – 1707) was an English divine and schoolmaster.

Early life

Gregory, born about 1625, was a native of Woodstock, Oxfordshire. He was educated at Westminster School under Busby, who, as he afterwards said, was not only a master but a father to him, and in 1641 was elected to a scholarship at Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating M.A. in 1648. He returned to Westminster School as usher till he was appointed head-master of the grammar school at Woodstock.

Teaching career

He was a successful teacher, and numbered among his pupils several sons of noble families. An ardent royalist he was chosen to preach the thanksgiving sermon for the Restoration at St. Mary's, Oxford, 27 May 1660, and afterwards published it under the title of ‘David's Return from Banishment.’ He also published ‘Votivum Carolo, or a Welcome to his sacred Majesty Charles II from the Master and Scholars of Woodstock School,’ a volume of English and Latin verses composed by Gregory and his pupils.

Francis Thomas Gregory

Francis Thomas "Frank" Gregory (19 October 1821 – 23 October 1888) was an English-born Australian explorer and politician.

Biography

Gregory was born at Farnsfield, Nottinghamshire, England, and was the younger brother of the explorer Augustus Gregory. Francis Gregory was brought to Western Australia in 1829, entered the public service as a cadet in 1841, became an assistant in 1847 and a staff surveyor in 1849.

With his two brothers, Gregory explored country north of Perth in 1846. In 1857 he explored the Upper Murchison River, and in 1858 examined the country farther to the east and north.

In 1860, Gregory was put in charge of an expedition to explore the area around Nickol Bay and its hinterland (the western part of the region known later as the Pilbara). The British government provided £2,000 towards the expenses. Gregory left Fremantle on 23 April 1861 and four days later, at Champion Bay (later Geraldton), he was joined by three volunteers, making a party of nine. They completed the landing of the horses near the Harding River on 24 May, and started inland the following day. After reaching the Fortescue River, the expedition followed it for several days, before a turn to the south-west was made and the Hardey River was followed. On 25 June, having reached latitude 23° 56' south, they sought to retrace their steps and reached their landing place on the coast on 19 July. On 29 July, the commenced a second foray, north and east of the previous track. Gregory returned with his party on 17 October and the expedition returned to Perth, which it reached on 9 November 1861. Gregory reported that he had seen two to three million acres (80,000 or 120,000 hectares) of land suitable for grazing, and he also drew attention to the possibility of a pearling industry being established. He was subsequently awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society (1863).
