Foster station

Foster is a station on the Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' system, on the Purple Line in Evanston, Illinois. It is located at 900 Foster Street (directional coordinates 2000 north, 900 west), just a few blocks west of Northwestern University's Evanston campus.

History

Structure

Like the rest of the 'L' tracks north of the Wilson station, Foster is elevated on a solid fill embankment, unlike the steel structure commonly associated with the 'L'. It lacks a formal station house; two staircases on the south side of Foster Street lead up to a small area containing a customer assistant's booth, a farecard vending machine, and two turnstiles. The island platform is composed of concrete and stretches north from the station entrance, covered by a canopy its entire length. Southbound trains stop on the west side of the platform, while northbound trains stop at the east part. The platform can only accommodate six-car trains because the north tip of the platform has been removed, although its framing and canopy are still in place.

The surname Foster (Forster, or Forester) derives from the ancient title and office bestowed upon those overseeing the upkeep and administration of hunting territories belonging to either the monarch, or bishop (where empowered to grant warren). The title begins to be adopted as a surname, in the historical record, from the 12th and 13th centuries onwards.

Foster (crater)

Foster is a small lunar crater that lies to the southeast of the larger crater Joule, on the far side of the Moon. The rim of Foster is slightly eroded, and the narrow inner walls slope directly down to the relatively dark interior floor. The rim has a small outward bulge along the southwest side. There is a small craterlet on the floor next to the northern rim. A tiny impact in the southeast part of the crater interior is surrounded by a small skirt of high albedo material, producing a bright patch.

Tantalum carbide

Tantalum carbides form a family of binary chemical compounds of tantalum and carbon with the empirical formula TaC_x, where x usually varies between 0.4 and 1. They are extremely hard, brittle, refractory ceramic materials with metallic electrical conductivity. They appear as brown-gray powders which are usually processed by sintering. Being important cermet materials, tantalum carbides are commercially used in tool bits for cutting applications and are sometimes added to tungsten carbide alloys. The melting points of tantalum carbides peak at about 3880 °C depending on the purity and measurement conditions; this value is among the highest for binary compounds. Only tantalum hafnium carbide may have a slightly higher melting point of about 3942 °C, whereas the melting point of hafnium carbide is comparable to that of TaC.

Preparation

TaC_x powders of desired composition are prepared by heating a mixture of tantalum and graphite powders in vacuum or inert gas atmosphere (argon). The heating is performed at temperature of about 2000 °C using a furnace or an arc-melting setup. An alternative technique is reduction of tantalum pentoxide by carbon in vacuum or hydrogen gas atmosphere at a temperature of 1500–1700 °C. This method was used to obtain tantalum carbide back in 1876, but it lacks control over the stoichiometry of the product.

CTA-102

In astronomy, CTA 102, also known by its B1950 coordinates as 2230+114 (QSR B2230+114) and its J2000 coordinates as J2232+1143 (QSO J2232+1143), is a quasar discovered in the early 1960s by a radio survey carried out by the California Institute of Technology. It has been observed by a large range of instruments since its discovery, including WMAP, EGRET, GALEX, VSOP and Parkes, and has been regularly imaged by the Very Long Baseline Array since 1995. It has also been detected in gamma rays, and a gamma-ray flare has been detected from it.

In 1963 Nikolai Kardashev proposed that the then-unidentified radio source could be evidence of a Type II or III extraterrestrial civilization on the Kardashev scale. Follow-up observations were announced in 1965 by Gennady Sholomitskii, who found that the object's radio emission was varying; a public announcement of these results caused a worldwide sensation. The idea that the emission was caused by a civilization was rejected when the radio source was later identified as one of the many varieties of a quasar.

Casino du Lac-Leamy

The Casino du Lac-Leamy (formerly the Casino de Hull) is a government run casino in Gatineau, Quebec.

The casino was opened in 1996, the third of a group of casinos built by the provincial government to raise funds. Ottawa, the larger city across the river, was also planning to build a casino in the early 1990s, but these plans were blocked by the provincial government. The Gatineau casino thus also serves Ottawa and Eastern Ontario. It is operated by Société des casinos du Québec a subsidiary of Loto-Québec. The casino provides the government with some $35 million per year in profit, employs more than 1,500 people and attracts more than three million visitors annually.

The casino is built on a rocky precipice over what was once International Portland Cement Company quarry but is today Lac de la Carrière. This lake is home to a large fountain, whose jet is visible through much of the old Hull sector during the summer. To the east of the casino is Lac Leamy, from which it gets its name. Attached to the casino is a 349-room Hilton hotel. The casino also has an 1100-seat theatre that has become one of the region's main music venues. The casino is also home to several bars and restaurants. In the casino itself there are more than 1,800 slot machines and more than 65 tables including roulette, blackjack, baccarat, craps and Texas hold 'em poker. It is open 24/7.
