Fortepiano [ˌfɔrteˈpjaːno] designates the early version of the piano, from its invention by the Italian instrument maker Bartolomeo Cristofori around 1700 up to the early 19th century. It was the instrument for which Haydn, Mozart, and the early Beethoven wrote their piano music. Starting in Beethoven's time, the fortepiano began a period of steady evolution, culminating in the late 19th century with the modern grand. The earlier fortepiano became obsolete and was absent from the musical scene for many decades. In the 20th century the fortepiano was revived, following the rise of interest in historically informed performance. Fortepianos are built for this purpose today in specialist workshops.
The fortepiano has leather-covered hammers and thin, harpsichord-like strings. It has a much lighter case construction than the modern piano and, except for later examples of the early nineteenth century (already evolving towards the modern piano), it has no metal frame or bracing. The action and hammers are lighter, giving rise to a much lighter touch, which in well-constructed fortepianos is also very responsive.
The expression fortepiano (sometimes called forte piano) is a sudden dynamic change used in a musical score, usually with the abbreviation fp, to designate a section of music in which the music should be played loudly (forte), then immediately softly (piano). It is often followed by a crescendo. The word is of Italian etymology literally translated as 'LoudSoft'.
Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 begins with a fortepiano:
They may say you're a man in disguise
Living a lie doesn't matter
All the gold in the world they can't hide
True love inside, love is much too strong
Loving you is never wrong
Dry your eyes
No use in crying
We'll keep on trying
Just the thought of you and me together
Is a supernatural high
Just the thought of you and me together
Just you and I
Just you and I
Some men lived their whole life in a dream
Worshiping things never knowing
Love is real lies a house on a hill
Just standing still, waiting on you now
Sheltering the love we found
Dry your eyes
No use in crying
We'll keep on trying
Just the thought of you and me together
Is a supernatural high
Just the thought of you and me together
Just you and I
Just you and I
You and I [You and I]
Oh, supernatural high [You and I]
You-ou-ou and I
Oh, supernatural high [Oh-oh-oh-oh, yeah-eah-eah]
Supernatural, supernatural high, supernatural high
Give me your love, I wanna stay high on your love, yes
I will
'Cause loving you is so sweet, so sweet
Just a supernatural high, just a supernatural high
I'm high on your love [Oh, baby]
Yeah, yeah... ooh yeah [Ooh, ooh yeah]
Ooh yeah [Oh,oh, oh, ohhhhhh]
Won't you listen to me right now?
Won't you listen to me right now
Won't you listen to me right now? [yeah, yeah]
Won't you listen to me right now?
Won't you listen to me right now?
Ooh yeah [Ooh, ooh yeah], ooh yeah, right now
Just the thought of you and me together
Is a supernatural high
Just the thought of you and me together
Just you and I
Just the thought of you and me together
[Just a thought of you and me together]
Is a supernatural high [is a supernatural high]
