For the Masses

For the Masses is a 1998 tribute album to Depeche Mode, specifically the works of Martin Gore. The album charted in America and reached the Top 20 in Germany, making it the most successful Depeche Mode tribute album of all time.

The project was started by the band members of God Lives Underwater, David Reilly in particular, in collaboration with their manager Gary Richards and Philip Blaine of 1500 Records (an A&M Records label until 2001), featuring a wide array of bands including The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Deftones, Rammstein, and Meat Beat Manifesto. Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, and Foo Fighters wanted to do tracks but schedule complications prevented them. Manson, who wanted to cover "Personal Jesus," eventually did so for his greatest hits album Lest We Forget: The Best of in 2004.

The album title is taken from Depeche Mode's 1987 album Music for the Masses. The album cover was photographed by Martyn Atkins who shot and designed early Depeche Mode artwork; the whole album artwork is consistent with the past Depeche Mode albums.

For the Masses is the second studio album by British grindie band Hadouken!. It was recorded in Groningen, The Netherlands during the Summer of 2009, and preceded by the release of the M.A.D. EP.

The album was released on 25 January 2010. Fans who pre-ordered the album through the official website received a signed copy a few days early, with their name included on a mini poster inside the case.

Reception

Reviews for the album have been mostly negative.Drowned in Sound stated that "This aggressive tone... breaks new boundaries in something absolutely ridiculous", whilst NME feels "James Smith is in the throes of an aneurysm. By the end of For the Masses you might well be wishing one on yourself just for sweet relief." Both reviewers gave the album 3 out of 10 stars. One notable exception to this negative trend was Q, whose reviewer called the album "addictive, energizing, and catchy as hell."

The Masses

The Masses was a graphically innovative magazine of socialist politics published monthly in the United States from 1911 until 1917, when federal prosecutors brought charges against its editors for conspiring to obstruct conscription. It was succeeded by The Liberator and then later The New Masses. It published reportage, fiction, poetry and art by the leading radicals of the time such as Max Eastman, John Reed, Dorothy Day, and Floyd Dell.

History

Piet Vlag, an eccentric socialist immigrant from the Netherlands, founded the magazine in 1911. Vlag’s dream of a co-operatively operated magazine never worked well, and after just a few issues, he left for Florida. His vision of an illustrated socialist monthly had, however, attracted a circle of young activists in Greenwich Village to The Masses that included visual artists from the Ashcan school like John French Sloan. These Greenwich Village artists and writers asked one of their own, Max Eastman (who was then studying for a doctorate under John Dewey at Columbia University), to edit their magazine. John Sloan, Art Young, Louis Untermeyer, and Inez Haynes Gillmore (among others) mailed a terse letter to Eastman in August 1912: “You are elected editor of The Masses. No pay.” In the first issue, Eastman wrote the following manifesto:

Mahachon (Thai: มหาชน, 'The Masses') was a Thai newspaper, published as an organ of the Communist Party of Thailand. It was started in 1942 as a clandestine publication. It was legally published weekly between October 25, 1945 and 1950. After becoming legal, Mahachon had its editorial office near Sanam Luang, Bangkok.
