Florence St. John

Florence St. John (8 March 1855 – 30 January 1912), was an English singer and actress of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras famous for her roles in operetta, musical burlesque, music hall, opera and, later, comic plays.

St. John began her career while still a teenager. By 1879, St. John was starring in new London productions, often creating roles, beginning with the title role in an English version of Madame Favart, which earned her critical praise. Despite occasional illnesses, she created the leading soprano roles in the light operas Olivette (1880), Barbe-bleue (1883), Nell Gwynne (1884) and Erminie (1885), among several others. In 1888, she joined the Gaiety Theatre company, playing Marguerite in the hit Victorian burlesque Faust up to Date, which toured America (1889–90), and then the British provinces. She then starred in Carmen up to Data.

In the early 1890s, St. John continued to pay at the Gaiety and also toured in the operetta Rip van Winkle. In 1892, she starred in In Town, which became a hit and ushered in the age of the Edwardian musical comedy. This was followed by the hit the burlesque Little Christopher Columbus. In 1894, she joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in Mirette, created the role of Rita in The Chieftain and toured as Winifred in The Vicar of Bray. In the mid-1890s, she returned to concert singing, appearing regularly in the weekly Ballad Concerts at St James's Hall for many years. In 1897, she rejoined D'Oyly Carte, starring in the title role in the Savoy version of The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein.

St. John is an English restaurant on St John Street in Smithfield, London. It was opened in October 1994 by Fergus Henderson, Trevor Gulliver and Jon Spiteri, on the premises of a former bacon smoke-house. Under Henderson's guidance as head chef, St. John has specialised in "nose to tail eating", with a devotion to offal and other cuts of meat rarely seen in restaurants, often reclaiming traditional British recipes. Typical dishes include pigs' ears, ducks' hearts, trotters, pigs' tails, bone marrow and, when in season, squirrel. As result, St. John has developed a following amongst gastronomic circles: "chefs, foodies, food writers and cooks on sabbatical".

Awards and accolades

St. John has won numerous awards and accolades, including Best British and Best overall London Restaurant at the 2001 Moet & Chandon Restaurant Awards. It has also been consistently placed in Restaurant magazine's annual list of the Top 50 restaurants in the world. Most recently it was placed 41st, up from 43rd in the 2010 rankings. It was awarded a Michelin star in 2009. St. John Hotel was awarded a Michelin star in September 2012.

St. John (crater)

St. John is an eroded lunar impact crater on the Moon's far side. This crater is situated to the northeast of the huge walled plain Mendeleev, and southwest of the crater Kohlschütter. To the east of St. John is the small crater Mills.

This is a heavily worn and eroded crater formation that is now little more than an uneven depression in the surface. It is scarcely distinguishable from the surrounding terrain, except from the shadows cast by the outer rim. The interior floor is uneven and marked by a chain of three small craterlets near the midpoint.

Florence Foster Jenkins is an upcoming American–British biographical comedy-drama film directed by Stephen Frears and written by Nicholas Martin. The film stars Meryl Streep as Florence Foster Jenkins, a New York heiress who became an opera singer notorious for her bad singing skills. Other cast members include Hugh Grant, Simon Helberg, Nina Arianda, and Rebecca Ferguson. Filming began in May 2015 in London.

On October 21, 2014, it was announced that Stephen Frears would next direct a biopic Florence, scripted by Nicholas Martin, about Florence Foster Jenkins, a famous opera singer.Meryl Streep was set to play Jenkins while Hugh Grant was set to play stage actor St. Clair Bayfield, Jenkins' partner and manager.Michael Kuhn and Tracey Seaward would produce the film, which Pathé would finance and handle the sales at American Film Market. In November 2014, the film was sold to international distributors, and Pathé would distribute the film in the UK, France and Switzerland.Simon Helberg was set on March 27, 2015 to play Cosmé McMoon, pianist and the accompanist to Jenkins.Rebecca Ferguson was added to the cast on April 1, 2015 to play Bayfield's suffering wife. Peter Andre is a royal BBC correspondent who gets sacked after first making bizarre and inaccurate claims about the Royal Family (such as Prince Charles having magical powers, describing The Queen as "The Main One" and mistaking Princess Eugenie for her mother, Sarah, Duchess of York) and then declaring his love for Princess Anne through song. He later attempts to enter a royal garden party to give her some drawings, despite being disheveled and without trousers, and is turned away by police. The character's name is a reference to the singer. There are also two deleted scenes in which Peter Andre appears backstage at the Royal Variety Performance and at a drug rehab centre.

Florence is a train station in Florence, South Carolina, United States served by Amtrak, the national railroad passenger system. Florence is served by Amtrak's Palmetto and Silver Meteor routes and is a service and smoking stop for the Auto Train. The station was built by CSX in 1996 as a replacement for the much larger former station, which is now owned by the McLeod Regional Medical Center.
