Floodplain swamp

A floodplain swamp is a swamp habitat in Florida. They occur in areas of flooding and inundation along streams and rivers. They have a lot in common with strand swamps, found further south where lack of slope prevents stream formation and host a variety of plant and animal species.

Swamp

A swamp is a wetland that is forested. Many swamps occur along large rivers where they are critically dependent upon natural water level fluctuations. Other swamps occur on the shores of large lakes. Some swamps have hammocks, or dry-land protrusions, covered by aquatic vegetation, or vegetation that tolerates periodic inundation. The two main types of swamp are "true" or swamp forests and "transitional" or shrub swamps. In the boreal regions of Canada, the word swamp is colloquially used for what is more correctly termed a bog or muskeg. The water of a swamp may be fresh water, brackish water or seawater. Some of the world's largest swamps are found along major rivers such as the Amazon, the Mississippi, and the Congo.

Geomorphology and hydrology

Swamps are characterized by slow-moving to stagnant waters. They are usually associated with adjacent rivers or lakes. Swamps are features of areas with very low topographic relief.

Swamp (album)

Swamp is the debut and only album from English songwriter and producer Phil Thornalley.

The album was released to commercial failure, where Swamp failed to make an appearance on the American Billboard 200 Albums Chart. A total of two singles were released from the album. "Love Me Like a Rock" was released in 1988 whilst "Listen" was released in 1989, and like the album were both commercially unsuccessful.

Album title

The album's title was named after Thornalley's own private studio Swamp Studios, located in Northwest London.

Background

Largely a songwriter and producer for a wide range of musical artists, Thornalley branched into his own solo material once, aside from a stand-alone single "So This is Love" from 1983.

In Thornalley's biography on his official website, he mentions the Swamp album, stating "At the studio I would stay 'after hours' to record my own songs and was signed to MCA in the USA and made my flop solo album Swamp. By this time, my childhood friend Mike Nocito had started the group Johnny Hates Jazz and invited me to join for their second album called Tall Stories. I realized that my passion was for writing songs; not performing them."

Swamp (comic strip)

Swamp is a comic strip created by Australian Gary Clark. It was first published in 1981 in the Sunshine Coast Daily. According to Clark, the inspiration and model for this strip was the creeks and lagoons in a bushy suburban Brisbane where he grew up in the 1960s. He describes the strip as a "down-to-earth look at a bewildered society thriving in an ever-increasing complex world."

The popular characters in the comic strip are : Ding Duck, Wart & Mort Frog, Old Man Croc, Bob the Crayfish, The Dung Beetles, Air Traffic Controller, The Ants, The Bludgerigar. Ding Duck and the Air Traffic Controller are popular worldwide in aviation circles. Wart & Mort Frog are popular with organisations and websites that promote water quality and sustainability and a clean, green environment.

Under license to AKASHI HIFUKU KOGYO Co. Ltd, the Swamp characters appear on upscale casual and sportswear especially golf sportswear in Japan and South Korea.

It is syndicated to newspapers throughout Australia, New Zealand and Europe and translated into seven languages.

Floodplain

A floodplain or flood plain is an area of land adjacent to a stream or river that stretches from the banks of its channel to the base of the enclosing valley walls and experiences flooding during periods of high discharge. It includes the floodway, which consists of the stream channel and adjacent areas that actively carry flood flows downstream, and the flood fringe, which are areas inundated by the flood, but which do not experience a strong current. In other words, a floodplain is an area near a river or a stream which floods when the water level reaches flood stage.

Formation

Flood plains are made by a meander eroding sideways as it travels downstream. When a river breaks its banks and floods, it leaves behind layers of alluvium (silt). These gradually build up to create the floor of the flood plain. Floodplains generally contain unconsolidated sediments, often extending below the bed of the stream. These are accumulations of sand, gravel, loam, silt, and/or clay, and are often important aquifers, the water drawn from them being pre-filtered compared to the water in the river.

Floodplain (Sara Groves album)

Floodplain is the eighth studio album and twelfth album overall from Sara Groves. Fair Trade Services alongside Columbia Records released the album on November 6, 2015. Groves worked with Brown Bannister, Steve Brewster, Scott Dente, Daniel Phelps, and Matt Pierson, in the production of this album.

Critical reception

Indicating in a four star review by CCM Magazine, Andy Argyrakis responds, "the 13 pensive pop tracks have a heavy yet hopeful heart placed strikingly across her own production". Mark Rice, giving the album four stars for Jesus Freak Hideout, describes, "as with many of Grove's albums containing complex themes and simple, organic music, it does take a certain mindset and repeated listens to really appreciate Floodplain in all its depth." Awarding the album five stars at New Release Today, Kevin Davis states, "Floodplain is a standout, profound listening experience...This is truly a great album and a moving and prayerful listening experience which reflects how we are bound together as believers in faith, love and vulnerability." Madeleine Dittmer, rating the album four and a half stars from The Christian Beat, says, "Sara Groves masterfully creates a beautiful collection of songs in this new album...Floodplain is an impressive album that will draw you in and invite you to deepen your relationship with God." Reviewing the album for The Phantom Tollbooth, Bert Saraco writes, "Floodplain is another brilliant album by Sara Groves. An accessible work fof wisdom and beauty: lyrically poetic and musically smart, Floodplain is still essentially a pop album replete with hooks and well-informed by the best of the classic rock era."
