Flintshire

Flintshire (Welsh: Sir y Fflint) is the most north-easterly county in Wales, bordering the English county of Cheshire to the east, Denbighshire to the west and Wrexham County Borough to the south. It is named after the historic county of Flintshire which had notably different borders. Flintshire is considered part of the Welsh Marches and formed part of the historic Earldom of Chester and Flint. The county is governed by Flintshire County Council.

History

Flintshire takes its name from the former county of Flintshire established in 1536 which existed until 1974 when it was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972. Its re-establishment in 1996 under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994 does not follow those original boundaries but covers a smaller area.

Early history

At the time of the Roman invasion, the area of present day Flintshire was inhabited by the Deceangli, one of the Celtic tribes in ancient Britain, with the Cornovii to the east and the Ordovices to the west. Lead and silver mine workings are evident in the area, with several sows of lead found bearing the name 'DECEANGI' inscribed in Roman epigraphy. The Deceangli appear to have surrendered to Roman rule with little resistance. Following Roman Britain, and the emergence of various petty kingdoms, the region had been divided into the Hundred of Englefield (Welsh: Cantref Tegeingl), derived from the Latin Deceangli.

Flintshire (historic)

Flintshire (Welsh: Sir y Fflint), also known as the County of Flint, was one of Wales' thirteen historic counties, a former administrative county (and a vice-county), which mostly lay on the north-east coast of Wales.

Flintshire was notable as having one of the few large county exclaves (an area known as "English Maelor" or "Maelor Saesneg") to survive most of the 20th century.

The administrative county of Flint was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972 on 1 April 1974, becoming part of the new county of Clwyd. The exclaves became part of Wrexham Maelor district – other parts formed the districts of Alyn and Deeside, Delyn and Rhuddlan. A unitary authority, also named Flintshire, was formed in 1996 under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, consisting only of the Alyn and Deeside and Delyn districts – the Wrexham Maelor parts now form part of Wrexham County Borough, with the former Rhuddlan district forming the northernmost part of the current Denbighshire unitary authority.

Flintshire (horse)

Flintshire (foaled 4 April 2010) is a British-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. Unraced as a juvenile, he was one of the best three-year-old colts in France in 2013, winning the Prix du Lys and the Grand Prix de Paris. In 2014 he finished second in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and the Breeders' Cup Turf before recording his biggest win in the Hong Kong Vase. As five-year-old he won the Sword Dancer Invitational Handicap and again finished second in the Arc.

Background

Flintshire is a dark bay or brown colt with a small white star and a white sock on his right front leg, bred in the United Kingdom by his owner, Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms. He was sired by Dansili, whose other progeny have included Harbinger, The Fugue, Dank and Rail Link. Flintshire's dam Dance Routine was a successful racemare whose wins included the Prix de Royaumont and the Prix de Royallieu. The colt was sent into training with Andre Fabre at Chantilly. He has been ridden in all of his races by Maxime Guyon.
