Airline hub

Airline hubs are airports that an airline uses as a transfer point to get passengers to their intended destination. It is part of a hub and spoke model, as opposed to the Point to Point model, where travelers moving between airports not served by direct flights change planes en route to their destinations.

Many airlines also use focus cities, which have a good catchment area and function much the same as hubs, but on a smaller scale and may also function as feeders to main hubs. Some airlines also use the term secondary hubs for large focus cities. Some airlines may use only a single hub, while other airlines use multiple hubs. Hubs are used for both passenger flights as well as cargo flights.

A hub in the middle of a route is more effective than at either end as connecting traffic more easily fills the plane – passengers prefer a one-stop (two-leg) route over a two-stop (three-leg) route. The FAA uses the term airline hub based on number of commercial passengers in the FAA airport categories, re-evaluated every year. Airlines often have their headquarters in a major hub, whether on the same campus as the hub airport (for example, Delta Air Lines has its headquarters at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, a Delta hub), or otherwise in the city served by the hub (for example, United Airlines has its headquarters in Chicago, which is served by O'Hare International Airport, a United hub).

Flight (Steinbeck story)

"Flight" is a short story by American writer John Steinbeck, first published in his collection The Long Valley. It appears in the ledger notebook under the title "Man Hunt". The story outlines a young man, Pépé, who is sent into town by his mother. She says he is not yet a man. While he is gone, Pépé kills a man, and after his return, he is forced to flee.

Flight (2012 film)

Flight is a 2012 American drama film directed by Robert Zemeckis. The film stars Denzel Washington as William "Whip" Whitaker Sr., an airline pilot who miraculously crash-lands his plane after it suffers an in-flight mechanical failure, saving nearly everyone on board. Immediately following the crash, he is hailed a hero, but an investigation soon leads to questions that put the captain in a different light.

Flight was the first live-action film directed by Robert Zemeckis since Cast Away and What Lies Beneath, both released in 2000, and his first R-rated film since Used Cars in 1980. It was the second collaboration of Denzel Washington and John Goodman, who had previously worked together in the 1998 film Fallen. It was also a box office success, grossing over $161 million worldwide and received mostly positive reviews. The film was nominated twice at the 85th Academy Awards, for Best Actor (Denzel Washington) and Best Original Screenplay (John Gatins).

Plot

Airline pilot captain William "Whip" Whitaker Sr. (Washington) uses cocaine to wake up after a night of very little sleep in his Orlando hotel room. He pilots SouthJet Flight 227 to Atlanta which experiences severe turbulence at takeoff. Copilot Ken Evans (Geraghty) takes over while Whip discreetly mixes vodka in his orange juice and takes a nap. He is jolted awake as the plane goes into a steep dive. Unable to regain control, Whip is forced to make a controlled crash landing in an open field and loses consciousness on impact.

Hub is a concept in network science which refers to a node with a number of links that greatly exceeds the average. Emergence of hubs is a consequence of a scale-free property of networks. While hubs cannot be observed in a random network, they are expected to emerge in scale- free networks. Uprise of hubs in scale-free networks is associated with power- law distribution. Hubs have a significant impact on the network topology. Hubs can be found in many real networks, such as Brain Network or Internet.

Definition

Hub is a component of a network, a high- degree node. It refers to a node that has significantly bigger number of links in comparison with other nodes in the network. Number of links (degrees) for hub in a scale-free network is much higher than the biggest node in a random network would have, keeping the size N of the network and average degree <k> constant. Existence of hubs is the biggest difference between random networks and scale-free networks. In random networks the number of degrees k is comparable for every node and therefore it is not possible for hubs to emerge. In scale-free networks a few nodes (hubs) have a high degree k while the rest of the nodes has a small number of links.

Hub (wrestler)

HUB (born August 7, 1978) is a Japanese professional wrestler whose real name has not been made public. He made his professional debut in March 1999 and is currently a freelance wrestler, most recently belonging to Okinawa Pro-Wrestling from 2008 until 2012. Whilst with Okinawa Pro-Wrestling he wrestled under the ring name Kaijin Habu Otoko (怪人・ハブ男).
