Flagstaff Mall is a regional shopping mall located in Flagstaff, Arizona, owned and operated by Macerich. The mall opened in 1979, and is anchored by Dillard's, JCPenney, and Sears. Mall property also encompasses The Marketplace, an outdoor power center with big-box retailers The Home Depot, Best Buy, Cost Plus World Market, and Old Navy.
Flagstaff Mall opened in 1979, developed by Phoenix-based real estate company Westcor. The mall's original anchors JCPenney and Sears had previously existed in downtown Flagstaff, but had moved to anchor the mall at opening. Dillard's joined the mall in 1986. The property remained the same until 2005, when ground was broken on The Marketplace, an outdoor addition to the mall. Phase one of the expansion, anchored by The Home Depot and featuring seven big-box retailers, opened in October 2008. A planned phase two, consisting of an outdoor lifestyle center anchored by a Harkins Theatres multiplex, never materialized.

Lowell Observatory is an astronomical observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, United States. Lowell Observatory was established in 1894, placing it among the oldest observatories in the United States, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. In 2011, the Observatory was named one of "The World's 100 Most Important Places" by TIME. It was at the Lowell Observatory that the dwarf planet Pluto was discovered in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh.
The Observatory's original 61-centimeter (24-inch) Alvan Clark & Sons Telescope is still in use today for public education. Lowell Observatory hosts 85,000 visitors per year at their Steele Visitors Center, who take guided daytime tours and view various wonders of the night sky through the Clark Telescope and other telescopes. It was founded by astronomer Percival Lowell of Boston's well-known Lowell family and is overseen by a sole trustee, a position historically handed down through the family. The first trustee was Lowell's third cousin Guy Lowell (1916–1927). Percival's nephew Roger Putnam served from 1927–1967, followed by Roger's son Michael (1967–1987), Michael's brother William Lowell Putnam III (1987–2013), and current trustee W. Lowell Putnam.
Flagstaff, known in Māori as Te Whanaupaki, is a prominent hill overlooking the northwest of the city of Dunedin, in New Zealand's South Island. Together with Mount Cargill, which lies to its northeast, it dominates the skyline of the city. Flagstaff lies seven kilometres to the north of Dunedin's city centre.
The hill was known by the Māori as Whakari, and an anglicised form of this name is still used for the Dunedin suburb of Wakari, which lies to the south of Flagstaff. The city's first road route to the Taieri Plains, which lie to the west, skirted the slopes of Flagstaff, and is still used as an alternative route out of the city.
Flagstaff rises to a height of 666 metres, and is part of the rim of the Dunedin Volcano, a long-extinct volcano of which the crater forms the Otago Harbour. The Pineapple Track, part of Dunedin's Skyline Walkway, crosses the peak of Flagstaff. The track's unusual name dates from the 1920s, when a local grocer used to act as a guide to the top of Flagstaff, handing out tins of pineapple as a refreshment at the top. The empty cans were often left behind, and were frequently seen along the side of the track as unofficial marker posts. This track, though not an arduous walk, needs to be treated with care, as the weather around Flagstaff can be extremely unpredictable.

Jeff and his friend Adelle also go to the mall, as Jeff tells her about his belief that modern society has become soulless and an shallow facsimile of itself. Jeff describes several of the people that they see at the mall and narratives what he imagines their back story to be: Donna, a bored housewife who obsesses over her attractiveness; Barry, a salesman who hates his business but stays in it because he understands it; Michael, a security guard who, after immigrating, becomes a widower and lives only for his job; and Danny, a married businessman who engages in casual sex.
