Fixer (comics)

The Fixer is the name of two different fictional characters appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

Publication history

The first Marvel Comics character known as the Fixer was Roscoe Sweeney. He first appeared in Daredevil #1 (Apr. 1964), and was created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Bill Everett.

The second Fixer was a long-time supervillain who later became a member of the Thunderbolts, first appearing in Strange Tales #141 (February 1966) and was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. After some time away from the team, he appeared as a regular character in Thunderbolts beginning with issue #144, until he was forced to leave the team in issue #174.

Fictional character biography

Roscoe Sweeney

Roscoe Sweeney was a gangster and crooked fight promoter who was involved in extortion and illegal gambling who operated as the "Fixer." He paid boxer "Battling Jack" Murdock to take a fall and lose a fight. Murdock accepted the money, but when he saw his son, Matthew, in the audience, he became determined to continue the fight and eventually won by a knockout. The Fixer's right-hand man Slade killed Jack Murdock after the fight in retaliation. Matthew Murdock, learning of his father's murder, vowed to bring men like the Fixer to justice. Matt Murdock became a lawyer, and also the superhero Daredevil to do so. Fixer and Slade went to Fogwell's Gym where they encountered Daredevil. When Fixer and Slade ran for it upon them being disarmed, Daredevil pursued them into the subway station. After Daredevil tripped Slade, Fixer had a fatal heart attack when confronted by Daredevil and died. As Fixer's body fell onto the subway tracks, Daredevil stopped a subway from running over Fixer's body. Slade was arrested and sentenced to death by the electric chair.

Photographic fixer

Photographic fixer is a mix of chemicals used in the final step in the photographic processing of film or paper. The fixer stabilises the image, removing the unexposed silver halide remaining on the photographic film or photographic paper, leaving behind the reduced metallic silver that forms the image. By fixation, the film or paper is insensitive to further action by light. Without fixing, the remaining silver halide would darken and cause fogging of the image. Fixation is commonly achieved by treating the film or paper with a solution of thiosulfate salt. Popular salts are sodium thiosulfate—commonly called hypo—and ammonium thiosulfate—commonly used in modern rapid fixer formulae. Fixation involves these chemical reactions (X = halide, typically Br⁻):

Fixer is used for processing all commonly used films, including black-and-white films, Kodachrome, and chromogenic films. In chromogenic films, the remaining silver must be removed by a chemical mixture called a bleach fix, sometimes shortened to blix. This mixture contains ammonium thiosulphate and ferrous EDTA, a powerful chelating agent.

FiXeR (Download (band) album)

Fixer (Styled as FiXeR) is the sixth studio LP by the electronic group Download. It is the first full-length album featuring all new material, since 2000's Effector. It is also notable for featuring an appearance from former band member, Mark Spybey, who left the band after touring in support of 1996's The Eyes of Stanley Pain.

Initially given a limited release of 1000 copies as part of Subconscious Communications' From The Vault II series,Fixer eventually sold out and, in 2011, was given a second pressing and a wider release through Metropolis Records. This new pressing is fundamentally the same as the first, with the exception of different album art.

During the production of this album, demos were posted on the group's MySpace account under various working titles including: "Gos", "Asspipe", "PE", "Heavy", "Pig & Turkey", "V Steak" and "Dirty".
