Designer stubble

Designer stubble is a short growth of a man's facial hair that became popular in the 1980s. This style was worn and reinvented by singer George Michael and actor Don Johnson and was adopted by many others. Several companies manufacture beard trimmers designed to maintain designer stubble, which is also known as "five o'clock shadow". It has also made a comeback in the early 2000s due to its popularization by David Beckham and George Clooney.

Beard

A beard is the collection of hair that grows on the chin, upper lip, cheeks or neck of humans and some non-human animals. In humans, usually only pubescent or adult males are able to grow beards. From an evolutionary viewpoint the beard is a part of the broader category of androgenic hair. It is a vestigial trait from a time when humans had hair on their face and entire body like the hair on gorillas. Since hair bore parasitic bugs and ticks, as humans evolved they lost more hair, due to the advantage that a more glabrous body prevented parasitic bugs. The evolutionary loss of hair is pronounced in some populations such as indigenous Americans and some east Asian populations, who have less facial hair, whereas Caucasians and the Ainu have more facial hair. Women with hirsutism, a hormonal condition of excessive hairiness, may develop a beard.

Throughout the course of history, societal attitudes toward male beards have varied widely depending on factors such as prevailing cultural-religious traditions and the current era's fashion trends. Some religions (such as Islam and Sikhism) have considered a full beard to be absolutely essential for all males able to grow one, and mandate it as part of their official dogma. Other cultures, even while not officially mandating it, view a beard as central to a man's virility, exemplifying such virtues as wisdom, strength, sexual prowess and high social status. However, in cultures where facial hair is uncommon (or currently out of fashion), beards may be associated with poor hygiene or a "savage", uncivilized, or even dangerous demeanor.

Five O'Clock Shadow

Five O'Clock Shadow is an a cappella group from Boston, Massachusetts, that has been in existence since 1991. The band has performed on FOX News, A&E Network, ABC, ESPN and VH-1's "breakthrough" series. They have released 4 cassettes and 6 CDs, winning many Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards.

The group has toured with many famous acts including The Boston Pops, Aaron Neville, Edwin McCain, Patty LaBelle, Kool and the Gang, Blessed Union of Souls and James Brown.
