First date

A first date is any type of initial meeting between two individuals, whether or not previously acquainted, where an effort is made to ask, plan, and organize some sort of social activity. Dating can vary between cultures, lifestyles, religion, gender, and sexual orientation.

In many countries and cultures, it is the process that romantic relationships are developed and future spouses are found. Often, people are set up on dates by their friends, or they meet the individual at work, a party, in class or online.

Purpose of a date

The purpose of a first date is the same as the purpose of any date. Because they often set the tone for the relationship, first dates are highly important. As the study by Mary Claire Morr Serewicz of the Department of Human Communication Studies at the University of Denver, and Paul Mongeau of Arizona State University, states that first dates "represent an important early event in the development of dating relationship." For example, if a date doesn’t go according to one's standards, the couple might choose to only be platonically involved, which means having no romantic relationship. However, if the date was successful and both parties’ goals were accomplished a second date might be lined up. First dates represent potential relational turning points in an individual's life.

50 First Dates

50 First Dates is a 2004 American romantic comedy film directed by Peter Segal and written by George Wing. The film stars Adam Sandler as a lothario veterinarian and Drew Barrymore as an amnesiac, along with Rob Schneider, Sean Astin, Lusia Strus, Blake Clark, and Dan Aykroyd.

Most of the film was shot on location in Oahu, Hawaii on the Windward side and the North Shore. Sandler and Barrymore won an MTV award. The fictitious memory impairment suffered by Barrymore's character, Goldfield's Syndrome, is similar to short term memory loss and anterograde amnesia.

The 2014 Malayalam film titled Ormayundo Ee Mukham is inspired by 50 First Dates.

Plot

Henry Roth is a veterinarian at Sea Life Park on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. He has a reputation of womanizing female tourists and shows no interest in committing to a serious relationship. Henry's closest friends are Ula, a marijuana-smoking Islander; his assistant Alexa, whose sexuality is unclear; Willy, his pet African penguin; and Jocko, a walrus.

First Dates

First Dates is a British reality television show that has aired on Channel 4 since 20 June 2013. The show is narrated by Brian Protheroe.

Format

The show is filmed at the Paternoster Chop House restaurant in Central London, showing many people on dates, all of whom have not met each other before. At the end of the date, the couples are interviewed together and asked whether they would like to see each other again.

The restaurant's maitre d' Fred Sirieix offers pieces to camera on the nature of love, romance and dating.

CiCi Coleman, Laura Tott and Sam Conrad are the waiting staff. Merlin Griffiths is the barman.

On 12 October 2015, a Celebrity edition of First Dates was shown. This was part of a fundraising evening on Channel 4 for Stand Up to Cancer, UK. The celebrities taking part were: Jorgie Porter, an actress in Hollyoaks; Anthea Turner, TV presenter; Jamie Laing, from Made in Chelsea; and Alexandra Burke, a singer, and winner of the 2008 X-Factor.
