Firewall (engine)

In automotive engineering, a firewall is the part of the bodywork that separates the engine from the driver and passengers.

It is most commonly a separate component of the body, or in monocoque construction, a separate steel pressing, but may be continuous with the floorpan or its edges may form part of the door pillars.

The name originates from steam-powered vehicles. The firewall would separate the driver from the fire heating the boiler.

In aviation, a firewall on an aircraft serves a similar purpose to that of a motor vehicle. In single-engine aircraft it is the part of the fuselage that separates the engine compartment from the cockpit. "Put the throttle to the firewall" refers to setting the engine to run at maximum speed. In most multi-engine propeller aircraft the firewall typically divides the nacelle from the wing of the aircraft, or divides the nacelle into two zones.

The Nick Stone Missions are a series of action thriller novels written by author Andy McNab, based on his own experiences in the SAS. The first book in the series, Remote Control was published in February 1998 by Transworld Publishers under their Corgi imprint.

Synopsis

The series follows the character of Nick Stone, an ex-military man who previously worked for the SAS, British Intelligence, and an American agency. Stone now works as a paid mercenary, willing to work in even the most difficult circumstances. The series has Stone dealing with assassination, political intrigue, as well as human rights, white slavery, and prostitution.

A firewall is a fire resistant barrier used to prevent the spread of fire for a prescribed period of time. Firewalls are built between or through buildings, structures, electrical substation transformers, or within an aircraft or vehicle.

Types

There are three main classifications of fire rated walls: fire walls, fire barriers, and fire partitions. To the layperson, the common use of language typically includes all three when referring to a firewall unless distinguishing between them becomes necessary. In addition specialty fire rated walls such as a High Challenge Fire Wall would require further distinctions.

Firewall (computing)

In computing, a firewall is a network security system that monitors and controls the incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules. A firewall typically establishes a barrier between a trusted, secure internal network and another outside network, such as the Internet, that is assumed to not be secure or trusted. Firewalls are often categorized as either network firewalls or host-based firewalls. Network firewalls are a software appliance running on general purpose hardware or hardware-based firewall computer appliances that filter traffic between two or more networks. Host-based firewalls provide a layer of software on one host that controls network traffic in and out of that single machine. Firewall appliances may also offer other functionality to the internal network they protect such as acting as a DHCP or VPN server for that network.

History

The term firewall originally referred to a wall intended to confine a fire or potential fire within a building. Later uses refer to similar structures, such as the metal sheet separating the engine compartment of a vehicle or aircraft from the passenger compartment.

Engine

An engine or motor is a machine designed to convert one form of energy into mechanical energy.Heat engines, including internal combustion engines and external combustion engines (such as steam engines), burn a fuel to create heat, which then creates a force. Electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical motion; pneumatic motors use compressed air and others—such as clockwork motors in wind-up toys—use elastic energy. In biological systems, molecular motors, like myosins in muscles, use chemical energy to create forces and eventually motion.

Terminology

The word "engine" derives from Old French engin, from the Latin ingenium–the root of the word ingenious. Pre-industrial weapons of war, such as catapults, trebuchets and battering rams, were called "siege engines", and knowledge of how to construct them was often treated as a military secret. The word "gin", as in "cotton gin", is short for "engine". Most mechanical devices invented during the industrial revolution were described as engines—the steam engine being a notable example.

Ray Alder

Ray Alder (born as Ray Balderrama on August 20, 1967) has been the lead vocalist of the progressive metal band Fates Warning since their 1988 release No Exit.

He has released two albums Engine in 1999 and Superholic in 2002 with Engine.

He also sang on Redemption's albums The Origins of Ruin, The Fullness of Time, Snowfall on Judgment Day and This Mortal Coil, having produced their debut self-titled release in 2002.

He has recently worked with underground emcee/producer Necro for his album entitled Death Rap.

Ray Alder was featured at a show with the band Dream Theater at Los Angeles, California on May 18, 1998.

On March 16, 2010, Fates Warning released a deluxe edition of their 1991 album, Parallels. This edition has been fully re-mastered and contains over three hours of music and live footage. Parallels was one of Fates Warning's most successful releases due to the commercial success of the singles Eye To Eye, Point Of View and We Only Say Goodbye. According to Metal Blade records (2010) Parallels has proven to be one of the most influential albums in the prog and metal genres, despite its hotly debated status among fans as a "commercial" sounding album. Commenting on the album, Ray Alder is quoted on the "Metal Blade Records Website".  as follows, "I think it's one of the best albums we ever put out and I'm happy that fans have the chance to take a second look at this important record.
