Firefly

The Lampyridae are a family of insects in the beetle order Coleoptera. They are winged beetles, and commonly called fireflies or lightning bugs for their conspicuous use of bioluminescence during twilight to attract mates or prey. Fireflies produce a "cold light", with no infrared or ultraviolet frequencies. This chemically produced light from the lower abdomen may be yellow, green, or pale red, with wavelengths from 510 to 670 nanometers.

About 2,000 species of fireflies are found in temperate and tropical environments. Many are in marshes or in wet, wooded areas where their larvae have abundant sources of food. Their larvae emit light and often are called "glowworms", in particular, in Eurasia. In the Americas, "glow worm" also refers to the related Phengodidae. In many species, both male and female fireflies have the ability to fly, but in some species, the females are flightless.

Biology

Fireflies tend to be brown and soft-bodied, often with the elytra, or front wings, more leathery than those of other beetles. Although the females of some species are similar in appearance to males, larviform females are found in many other firefly species. These females can often be distinguished from the larvae only because they have compound eyes. The most commonly known fireflies are nocturnal, although there are numerous species that are diurnal. Most diurnal species are not luminescent; however, some species that remain in shadowy areas may produce light.

Firefly (InMe song)

"Firefly" is the second single by Essex alternative metal band InMe. The 2002 song starts off very melodic with guitar harmonics and a drum and bass driven verse. It then progresses to a heavier pre-chorus/chorus. The chorus and breakdown have the repetitive lyric "It's all over now / You've killed me".

From the syncopated strike on the snare to the electrifying sound of the lead guitar and the bass, all bands make their mark by offering a different kind of entertainment to audiences. The Firefly band differentiates itself from the competition by singing not only about love or heartbreak but by articulating ways on how to prevent destructive fires.

The name of the band, which means Firemen Forever Love You, first jammed together during the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Christmas Party on December 22, 2002. Since then, the group continued to deliver their unique message through original songs, most of which are compiled in an album titled Langit. This 10-track album has the carrier single "Langit", which features Cesar Apolinario as the singer. It also includes the tracks "Kasama Mo Ako" featuring Rico J. Puno, "Trapik", "Kalikasan", "Sunog", "Taong Grasa", "Mr. Bell", "Hoy!", "I Love You", and "Nasaan Ka Na".

Firefly (train)

The Firefly was a streamlined passenger train operated by the St. Louis – San Francisco Railway (the "Frisco"). At various times, it served St Louis, Missouri, Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Kansas City, Missouri, and Fort Scott, Kansas. It operated from 1939 to 1960 and was the Frisco's first streamliner.

History

The Frisco introduced the Firefly on December 10, 1939, over the Kansas City—Tulsa—Oklahoma City route. The Firefly was the Frisco's first streamliner, intended to compete with the Santa Fe, which would soon launch the diesel streamliner "The Tulsan" to compete with it. The train's last run between Fort Scott and Tulsa took on place on May 22, 1960; between Fort Scott and Kansas City it ran combined with the Sunnyland. The Firefly was the last Frisco train serving the Tulsa-Fort Scott route.

Equipment

Two consists were necessary to protect the Firefly's schedule; each was composed of refurbished heavyweight cars. A standard consist included a baggage-mail coach (16 seats), coach (60 seats), and cafe-parlor car. Initially power was supplied by a pair of 1910 Pacific type 4-6-2 steam locomotives, numbers 1026 and 1031, which were refurbished and streamlined in the road's Springfield shops. The driving wheels were enlarged from 69" to 73" by means of extremely thick driver tires, for greater speed. Later the run was powered by various of the road's EMD E-8A locomotives named for racehorses, or by EMD FP-7 locomotives.

Deep Space Industries

Deep Space Industries, or DSI, is an American privately-held company with global operations, operating in the space technology and resources sectors. The company is developing spacecraft technologies that are needed for asteroid mining, and is currently selling satellites that use these technologies. DSI is expecting to make in-space materials, extracted from asteroids, commercially available in the early 2020s, include space-based refueling, power, asteroid processing, and manufacturing.

History

DSI was formally announced on January 22, 2013 and currently has three spacecraft and patent-pending microgravity manufacturing technologies under development. According to David Gump, founding CEO, speaking at the company's launch in Santa Monica, California, another early goal of the company is to refuel communications satellites that contain a refueling interface. He also foresees NASA as a potential customer, with DSI fueling manned and robotic Mars missions in low Earth orbit before they set off for the red planet. Eventually, DSI plans to construct large communications platforms and space-based-solar-power satellites. Long-term plans envision the development of space colonies and vehicles from asteroid material.

Firefly (TNT album)

Firefly is the sixth studio album by the Norwegian hard rock band TNT. It was released in 1997.

The album was a comeback for TNT who split up in 1992 after the release of Realized Fantasies. It also marked a significant change in TNT's sound and is still heavily debated among the fans of the band. The music is more heavy and modern, reflecting the changes in the music business in the first half of the 1990s. It is also Tony Harnell's favorite album. New singer Tony Mills was told by Le Tekrø in 2007 to not even bother listening to it as they would not play anything from the album live.

The album was not as successful as some of TNT's previous albums, but still achieved some success in Norway and Japan. The band toured those countries in support of the album.

The song "Soldier of the Light" was never meant for the album. It was a demo from the Realized Fantasies sessions and was put on Firefly because the Japanese record company liked it so much.

They opened their live shows with "Only the Thief" as an intro before launching into "Somebody Told You" with Tony Harnell doing the first lines of the songs lyrics before Le Tekrø opened with the song's riff.
