Fir wave

A fir wave is a set of alternating bands of fir trees in sequential stages of development, observed in forests on exposed mountain slopes in several areas, including northeastern North America and Japan. Fir waves develop by wave-regeneration following wind disturbance, and is one of various types of patterned vegetation.

How fir waves form

Fir waves form by the ecological process of wave-regeneration. When a tree falls, a gap in the canopy is formed. This exposes trees at the leeward edge of the gap to greater wind. These trees are thus more likely to die from damage and desiccation than windward trees. These leeward trees eventually die, gradually expanding the gap downwind. At the same time, young trees start to grow in the wind shadow in the windward portion of the gap, protected from the high winds by the surviving trees. The combination of dying trees at the leeward edge and regenerating trees at the windward edge results in the propagation of the fir waves in the direction of the predominant prevailing wind. The period of the waves is variable, typically about 60 years in Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea). One can view these from the Appalachian Trail as it ascends the Hunt Spur of Mount Katahdin in Maine. Looking out to the Owl and the Brothers are extensive areas of this phenomenon.

Fir

Firs (Abies) are a genus of 48–56 species of evergreen coniferous trees in the family Pinaceae. They are found through much of North and Central America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa, occurring in mountains over most of the range. Firs are most closely related to the genus Cedrus (cedar). Douglas firs are not true firs, being of the genus Pseudotsuga.

They are large trees, reaching heights of 10–80 m (33–262 ft) tall and trunk diameters of 0.5–4 m (1 ft 8 in–13 ft 1 in) when mature. Firs can be distinguished from other members of the pine family by the unique attachment of their needle-like leaves and by their different cones.

Identification of the different species is based on the size and arrangement of the leaves, the size and shape of the cones, and whether the bract scales of the cones are long and exserted, or short and hidden inside the cone.

Falling in Reverse

Falling in Reverse is an American rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada, formed in 2008, signed to Epitaph Records. The band is led by lead singer Ronnie Radke along with lead guitarist Christian Thompson, rhythm guitarist Derek Jones, bassist Zakk Sandler and drummer Ryan Seaman. They released their debut album, The Drug In Me Is You, on July 26, 2011, which peaked at number 19 on the Billboard 200, selling 18,000 copies in its first week of sales. "Raised by Wolves", "The Drug in Me Is You", "I'm Not a Vampire", "Good Girls Bad Guys" and "Pick Up the Phone" were all released as singles to promote the album. Their second studio album, Fashionably Late, was released on June 18, 2013, which peaked at number 17 on the Billboard 200. "Alone", "Fashionably Late", "Born to Lead", and "Bad Girls Club" were released as singles to promote the album. The band released three singles, "God, If You Are Above..." , "Guillotine IV (The Final Chapter)", and "Sexy Drug", in promotion of their third album Just Like You, which was released on February 24, 2015. Wave

In physics, a wave is an oscillation accompanied by a transfer of energy that travels through space or mass. Frequency refers to the addition of time. Wave motion transfers energy from one point to another, which displace particles of the transmission medium—that is, with little or no associated mass transport. Waves consist, instead, of oscillations or vibrations (of a physical quantity), around almost fixed locations.

There are two main types of waves. Mechanical waves propagate through a medium, and the substance of this medium is deformed. The deformation reverses itself owing to restoring forces resulting from its deformation. For example, sound waves propagate via air molecules colliding with their neighbors. When air molecules collide, they also bounce away from each other (a restoring force). This keeps the molecules from continuing to travel in the direction of the wave.

The second main type of wave, electromagnetic waves, do not require a medium. Instead, they consist of periodic oscillations of electrical and magnetic fields originally generated by charged particles, and can therefore travel through a vacuum. These types of waves vary in wavelength, and include radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, and gamma rays.

Park West, Dublin

Park West (Irish: Páirc an Iarthair) is a large business campus within greater Ballyfermot, notably Cherry Orchard, Dublin, Ireland, with some residential development.

Location and content

Located just inside the M50 orbital motorway in west Dublin, the development comprises several million square metres of office and retail space, along with an Aspect hotel, a private hospital, and three apartment complexes.

Park West is in the administration of Dublin City Council, and Dublin postal districts Dublin 10 and Dublin 12, chiefly the latter.

Art

Park West is home to Europe's tallest wind and water mobile sculpture, Wave by Angela Conner. It is a 39.3 metre (129 feet) tall sculpture made of polystyrene covered with layers of carbon resin. It is fixed into a 7.6 metre (25 foot) pit filed with 9.5 tonnes of lead.

Transport

The campus is accessible by road (primarily the (New) Nangor Road, as well as Killeen Road and Cloverhill), bus (routes 79A and 151) and rail at the Park West and Cherry Orchard railway station. At a moderate distance to the south is the Kylemore stop on the Luas red line.

Wave (Antonio Carlos Jobim album)

Wave is the third album by Antônio Carlos Jobim, released in 1967 on A&M Records. It is known as Jobim's most successful album to date (# 5 US JAZZ ALBUMS 1967,# 114 US ALBUMS 1968), and it was listed by Rolling Stone Brazil as one of the 100 best Brazilian albums in history.
