Filter

Filter may refer to:

Chemistry, engineering and materials

  • Filter (aquarium), critical components of both freshwater and marine aquaria
  • Filter (chemistry), a device (usually a membrane or layer) that is designed to physically block certain objects or substances while letting others through
  • Filter paper, a semi-permeable paper barrier placed perpendicular to a liquid or air flow. It is used to separate fine solids from liquids or air
  • Air filter, a device composed of fibrous materials which removes solid particulates such as dust, pollen, mold, and bacteria from the air
  • Oil filter, a filter to remove contaminants from engine oil, transmission oil, lubricating oil, or hydraulic oil
  • Pneumatic filter, a device which removes contaminants from a compressed air stream
  • Water filter, removes impurities from water by means of a fine physical barrier, a chemical process or a biological process. Filters cleanse water to various extents for irrigation, drinking water, aquariums, and pools
  • Optics and photography

    Water filter

A water filter removes impurities from water by means of a fine physical barrier, a chemical process or a biological process. Filters cleanse water to different extents for purposes like irrigation, drinking water, aquariums, ponds and swimming pools.

    Methods of filtration

Filters use sieving, adsorption, ion exchanges, biological metabolite transfer, and other processes. Unlike a sieve or screen, a filter can remove particles much smaller than the holes through which the water passes.

    Types

    Water treatment plant filters

Types of water filters media filters, screen filters, disk filters, slow sand filter beds, rapid sand filters, cloth filters, and biological filters such as algae scrubbers.

    Point-of-use filters

Point-of-use filters for home use include granular-activated carbon filters (GAC) used for carbon filtering, metallic alloy filters, microporous ceramic filters, carbon block resin (CBR), microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes. Some filters use more than one filtration method. An example of this is a multi-barrier system. Jug filters can be used for small quantities of drinking water. Some kettles have built-in filters, primarily to reduce limescale buildup.

    Filter (aquarium)

Aquarium filters are critical components of both freshwater and marine aquaria.Aquarium filters remove physical and soluble chemical waste products from aquaria, simplifying maintenance. Furthermore, aquarium filters are necessary to support life as aquaria are relatively small, closed volumes of water compared to the natural environment of most fish.

    Overview

Animals, typically fish, kept in fish tanks produce waste from excrement and respiration. Another source of waste is uneaten food or plants and fish which have died. These waste products collect in the tanks and contaminate the water. As the degree of contamination rises, the risk to the health of the aquaria increases and removal of the contamination becomes critical. Filtration is a common method used for maintenance of healthy aquaria.

Biological filtration and the nitrogen cycle

Proper management of the nitrogen cycle is a vital element of a successful aquarium. Excretia and other decomposing organic matter produce ammonia which is highly toxic to fish. Bacterial processes oxidize this ammonia into the slightly less toxic nitrites, and these are in turn oxidized to form the much less toxic nitrates. In the natural environment these nitrates are subsequently taken up by plants as fertilizer and this does indeed happen to some extent in an aquarium planted with real plants.

    There's a little place I'm going
    It's a place that I know well
    it's a little place that's growing
it's a little space like Hell
    goodbye mom
    goodbye dad
    goodbye brothers
    and my sisters
    So what makes you think
    I am coming back
this makes me feel so fucking bad
what makes you think I'm coming back
this makes me feel so fucking bad
    Yeah
    I'm going to Hell
    Yeah
    I'm going to Hell
    There's a little fear I'm showing
    I'm not so tough anymore
    I feel a sickness and it's growing
    I'm not so proud anymore
    goodbye mom
    goodbye dad
    goodbye brothers
    and my sisters
    So what makes you think
    I'm coming back
this makes me feel so fucking bad
what makes you think I'm coming back
this makes me feel so fucking bad
    Yeah
    I'm going to Hell
    Yeah
