Higgins is a surname found in England and in Ireland with several origins.

Origin in Ireland, the name is an anglicised version of the Gaelic family Ó hUiginn, who were high status poets between the 14th and 17th centuries. Descendants of this family include Bernardo O'Higgins, the first Head of State of Chile, and Kevin O'Higgins who was Minister for Justice in the first Irish Free State government.

Higgins (December 12, 1957 – November 11, 1975) was one of the best-known dog actors of the 1960s and 1970s. Most people remember him as the original Benji or as the uncredited dog from Petticoat Junction, two of the most popular roles he played during a 14-year career in show business.

Biography

Early life

Animal trainer Frank Inn found the famous canine at the Burbank Animal Shelter as a puppy. A fluffy black-and-tan mixed breed dog, he was marked like a Border Terrier, and Inn believed him to be a mix of Miniature Poodle, Cocker Spaniel, and Schnauzer.

Career

Higgins' career was facilitated by Frank Inn, who also trained Arnold Ziffel (the pig) and all the other animals used on the Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, and Green Acres sitcoms. His on-set assistant trainers included Gerry Warshauer and Karl Miller.

As an actor, Higgins first came to national attention as the uncredited dog who played the character of "Dog" on the television sitcom Petticoat Junction for six of the show's seven seasons, from 1964 to 1970 appearing in 149 episodes. He guest-appeared on the television sitcom Green Acres with Eva Gabor in 1965 and also made a guest appearance on the television sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies. He won a Patsy Award in 1967, and he was cover-featured on an issue of TV Guide magazine.

Feelings (Morris Albert song)

"Feelings" is a 1974 song with lyrics written by Brazilian singer Morris Albert, set to the tune of "Pour Toi," separately composed by Louis “Loulou” Gasté in 1957. Albert recorded "Feelings" as a single and later included it as the title track of his 1975 debut album. The song's lyrics, recognizable by their "whoa whoa whoa" chorus, concern the singer's inability to "forget my feelings of love". Albert's original recording of the song was very successful, performing well internationally. "Feelings" peaked at #6 on the pop and #2 on the Adult Contemporary charts in America.

Over the next few years "Feelings" was performed by many other vocalists including Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Salena Jones, Angelica Maria, Petula Clark, José José, Caetano Veloso, Engelbert Humperdinck, Muslim Magomayev, Shirley Bassey, Glen Campbell, The O'Jays, Sarah Vaughan, Walter Jackson, Sergey Penkin, Julio Iglesias, Dobie Gray and Johnny Mathis. It was also recorded by numerous easy listening bandleaders and ensembles such as Percy Faith, Ferrante & Teicher, 101 Strings and Herb Ohta whose ukulele rendition was recorded with André Popp's orchestra for A&M Records.

American singer Selena released 15 singles, 13 promotional singles, three soundtrack singles, three other charted songs, one charity record, and made nine other appearances throughout her career. In 1989, Selena released her self-titled debut album, under EMI Latin. Three singles were released, "Contigo Quiero Estar", "Mentiras", and "Sukiyaki". The latter peaked at number eight on the US Hot Latin Tracks chart, becoming Selena's first charting single, while the former was a cover song by Japanese crooner Kyu Sakamoto. "Buenos Amigos", a duet with Salvadoran recording artist Álvaro Torres, peaked at number one on the Hot Latin Tracks chart, giving Selena her first number one single. "Baila Esta Cumbia", the lead single from Ven Conmigo (1990) peaked within the top ten on the Latin Regional Digital Songs chart. Ven Conmigo yielded two other singles, "Ya Ves" and "La Tracalera", the latter peaked at number 20 on the Latin Regional Digital Songs chart. In 1992, Selena released her third studio album, Entre a Mi Mundo, which spawned four singles, "La Carcacha", "¿Qué Creías?" and "Amame" which attained the top 30 positions on the Latin charts, while "Como La Flor" became Selena's signature song as well as being one of her most popular songs after it peaked at number six on the Hot Latin Tracks.
