In user interface design, a mode is a distinct setting within a computer program or any physical machine interface, in which the same user input will produce perceived different results than it would in other settings. The best-known modal interface components are probably the Caps lock and Insert keys on the standard computer keyboard, both of which put the user's typing into a different mode after being pressed, then return it to the regular mode after being re-pressed.

An interface that uses no modes is known as a modeless interface. Modeless interfaces intend to avoid mode errors by making it impossible for the user to commit them.

Definition

A precise definition is given by Jef Raskin in his book The Humane Interface:

"An human-machine interface is modal with respect to a given gesture when (1) the current state of the interface is not the user's locus of attention and (2) the interface will execute one among several different responses to the gesture, depending on the system's current state." (Page 42).

Mode (literature)

In literature, a mode is an employed method or approach, identifiable within a written work. As descriptive terms, form and genre are often used inaccurately instead of mode; for example, the pastoral mode is often mistakenly identified as a genre. History of mode

In his Poetics, the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle uses 'mode' in a more specific sense. Kinds of 'poetry' (the term includes drama, flute music, and lyre music for Aristotle), he writes, may be differentiated in three ways: according to their medium of imitation, according to their objects of imitation, and according to their mode or 'manner' of imitation (section I). "For the medium being the same, and the objects the same, the poet may imitate by narration—in which case he can either take another personality as Homer does, or speak in his own person, unchanged—or he may present all his characters as living and moving before us" (section III). "Faded" is song by Canadian band soulDecision. It was released in December 1999 as the lead single from their debut album, No One Does It Better The song reached number-one in Canada and peaked at number 22 on the US Billboard Hot 100. and being nominated for song of the year at 2001 Juno Awards.

Background and writing

The song was written by Adam Stillman, who described the song as "being intoxicated and letting one's object of affection know how you feel." It incorporates soul, 1980s pop music and hip hop.

Versions

The song has three versions: one with the beginning lyrics "When I get you all alone, I'm gonna take off all your clothes"; an edited version with "When I get you all alone, I'm gonna move in nice and close"; and a third version featuring a verse by rapper Thrust.

Music video

The video was shot in Vancouver in an apartment building having various rooms. One room was a house party, another of the band performing in an all white room, and another of the band singing together. The video was released in 1999 in Canada and then internationally in 2000. The video reached the #4 spot on MTV's TRL and #5 on MuchMusic Countdown.

"Faded" is a song by Zhu, an electronic musician who has been active since the beginning of 2014. A remix extended play was released on June 29, 2014. "Faded" peaked at number one on the US Dance chart

One of the first radio stations to pick up "Faded", the alternative music orientated station Triple J, gave the song significant airplay which was responsible for its success in Australia. Subsequent to its success on Triple J, more mainstream stations began to play it, giving the song a larger audience. Eventually, "Faded" gained momentum internationally, becoming a club hit largely thanks to its initial success on Triple J. A black-and-white music video for the song was released on May 6, 2014. The track was nominated for Best Dance Recording at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, but lost to "Rather Be" by Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne.
