FC Wil 1900

FC Wil, also known as FC Wil 1900, is a Swiss football club, playing in the town of Wil, Canton St. Gallen in the east of Switzerland. The club was founded in 1900, hence the name.

Although the city of Wil has only 17,000 inhabitants, in 2004 FC Wil won the final of the Swiss Cup against Grasshopper Club Zürich.

History

FC Wil was formed in 1900 in the east of Switzerland by two workers from England. For the first two years of their life they were known as "FC Stella". In 1902 the club was renamed as "FC Fors" before finally settling in 1907 on FC Wil.

The early years of the club were very unremarkable, playing in the lower echelons of the Swiss football pyramid. Up until 1990 they had spent just three seasons in the second tier, the Challenge League, in 1922/23, 1952/53 and 1953/54.

In 1988 the club appointed Christian Gross as player manager. Gross managed the club between 1988 and 1993 and during this time guided the club to two promotions. Firstly to the third tier and then to the second tier. Christian Gross left in 1993 to manage Grasshopper Club Zürich and has since managed Tottenham Hotspur and FC Basel.

Wil

Wil is the capital of the Wahlkreis (constituency) of Wil in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

Wil is the third largest city in the Canton of St. Gallen, after the city of St. Gallen and Rapperswil-Jona, a twin city that merged in 2006. The municipality of Bronschhofen merged into Wil on 1 January 2013. After the merger the Community Identification Number changed from 3425 to 3427.

In 1984, Wil was awarded the Wakker Prize for the development and preservation of its architectural heritage.

Geography

Since the merger in 2013, Wil now has an area of 20.82 km² (8.04 sq mi).

Before the merger, Wil had an area, as of 2006, of 7.6 km² (2.9 sq mi). Of this area, 32.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while 13.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 53.4% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.7%) is non-productive (rivers or lakes).

The former municipality of Bronschhofen had an area, as of 2006, of 13.2 km² (5.1 sq mi). Of this area, 65.3% is used for agricultural purposes, while 22.1% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 12% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.5%) is non-productive (rivers or lakes). It consisted of the villages of Bronschhofen and Rossrüti as well as the hamlets of Maugwil, Trungen and the pilgrimage site of Dreibrunnen.

Wil, Zürich

Wil is a municipality in the district of Bülach in the canton of Zürich in Switzerland.

Geography

Wil has an area of 9 km² (3.5 sq mi). Of this area, 54.2% is used for agricultural purposes, while 30.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 14.5% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.9%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).

There are border crossings into Germany at near Wil town (to Bühl in Baden-Wurttemberg) and Buchenloo (to Dettighofen in Baden-Wurttemberg).

Demographics

Wil has a population (as of 31 December 2014) of 1,351.As of 2007, 7.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -1.6%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (95.5%), with Spanish being second most common ( 0.8%) and Italian being third ( 0.7%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 48.5% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the CSP (12.2%), the SPS (11.5%) and the FDP (11.4%).

Wil, Aargau

Wil was a municipality in the district of Laufenburg in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland. The municipality is located in the north-east of the Fricktal region, about 3 km from the border to Germany. On 1 January 2010 the municipalities of Hottwil, Etzgen, Mettau, Oberhofen and Wil merged into the municipality of Mettauertal.
