F. L. Lucas

Frank Laurence Lucas (1894–1967) was an English classical scholar, literary critic, poet, novelist, playwright, political polemicist, Fellow of King's College, Cambridge, and intelligence officer at Bletchley Park during World War II.

He is now best remembered for his scathing 1923 review of T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land, and for his book Style (1955; revised 1962), an acclaimed guide to recognising and writing good prose. His Tragedy in Relation to Aristotle's 'Poetics' (1927, substantially revised in 1957) was for over fifty years a standard introduction. His most important contribution to scholarship was his four-volume Complete Works of John Webster (1927), the first collected edition of the Jacobean dramatist since that of Hazlitt the Younger (1857), itself an inferior copy of Dyce (1830). Eliot called Lucas "the perfect annotator"; and subsequent Webster scholars have been indebted to him, notably the editors of the new Cambridge Webster (1995–2007).

Lucas is also remembered for his anti-fascist campaign in the 1930s, and for his wartime work at Bletchley Park, for which he received the OBE.

Lia Fáil

The Lia Fáil (Irish pronunciation: [ˌl̠ʲiə ˈfɑːl̠ʲ], meaning Stone of Destiny), not to be confused with the Stone of Scone, is a stone at the Inauguration Mound (Irish: an Forrad) on the Hill of Tara in County Meath, Ireland, which served as the coronation stone for the High Kings of Ireland. It is also known as the Coronation Stone of Tara. In legend, all of the kings of Ireland were crowned on the stone up to Muirchertach mac Ercae c. AD 500.

Mythical origin

There are several different, and conflicting, legends in Irish mythology describing how the Lia Fáil is said to have been brought to Ireland. The Lebor Gabala, dating to the eleventh century, states that it was brought in antiquity by the semi-divine race known as the Tuatha Dé Danann. The Tuatha Dé Danann had travelled to the "Northern Isles" where they learned many skills and magic in its four cities Falias, Gorias, Murias and Findias. From there they travelled to Ireland bringing with them a treasure from each city – the four legendary treasures of Ireland. From Falias came the Lia Fáil. The other three treasures are the Claíomh Solais or Sword of Light, the Sleá Bua or Spear of Lugh and the Coire Dagdae or The Dagda's Cauldron.

Kvaløya, Finnmark

Kvaløya is a large island in Finnmark county, Norway. The 336-square-kilometre (130 sq mi) island is divided between the municipalities of Hammerfest and Kvalsund. The town of Hammerfest is located in the western shore of the island. Other villages on the island include Forsøl, Rypefjord, and Stallogargo.

The island is connected to the mainland via Norwegian National Road 94 which crosses the Kvalsund Bridge in the southern part of the island. Most of the settlements on the island are on the western shore along the highway 94. There is a ferry connection between Kvaløya and the island of Seiland to the southwest. The highest point on the mountainous island is the 629-metre (2,064 ft) tall mountain Svartfjellet.

Tomášov

Tomášov (Hungarian: Fél) is a village and municipality in western Slovakia in Senec District in the Bratislava Region.

Geography

The municipality lies at an altitude of 128 metres and covers an area of 19.828 km².

History

In historical records the village was first mentioned in 1283. After the Austro-Hungarian army disintegrated in November 1918, Czechoslovak troops liberated the occupied area, later acknowledged internationally by the Treaty of Trianon. Between 1938 and 1945 Tomášov was once more occupied by Miklós Horthy's Hungary through the First Vienna Award. From 1945 until the Velvet Divorce, it was part of Czechoslovakia. Since then it has been part of Slovakia.

It has a population of about 2143 people.

Fruttero & Lucentini

Fruttero & Lucentini (or F. & L.) was the usual way for Carlo Fruttero and Franco Lucentini to sign their joint work, including novels, short stories, articles, anthologies. Their most successful works include the mysteries La donna della domenica, turned into a movie directed by Luigi Comencini, and A che punto è la notte.

They were also editors of the science fiction magazine Urania, and edited numerous science fiction or horror anthologies for Arnoldo Mondadori Editore until the mid-1980s.

Flight lieutenant

Flight lieutenant (Flt Lt in the RAF and IAF; FLTLT in the RAAF and RNZAF; formerly sometimes F/L in all services) is a junior commissioned air force rank which originated in the Royal Naval Air Service and continues to be used in the Royal Air Force and many other countries, especially in the Commonwealth. It is also sometimes used as the English translation of an equivalent rank in non-English-speaking countries, especially those which have an air force-specific rank structure.

Flight lieutenant ranks above flying officer and below squadron leader. The name of the rank is the complete phrase; it is never shortened to "lieutenant".

It has a NATO ranking code of OF-2, and is equivalent to a lieutenant in the Royal Navy and a captain in the British Army and the Royal Marines. The equivalent rank in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), Women's Royal Air Force (WRAF) (until 1968) and Princess Mary's Royal Air Force Nursing Service (PMRAFNS) (until 1980) was flight officer.
