Francis Newton Souza

Francis Newton Souza (12 April 1924 – 28 March 2002), commonly referred to as F. N. Souza, was an Indian artist. He was a founding member of the Progressive Artists' Group of Bombay, and was the first post-independence Indian artist to achieve high recognition in the West. Souza's style exhibited both low-life and high energy.

Early life and education

Francis Newton Souza was born to Roman Catholic parents in the village of Saligao, Goa. He lost his father at the tender age of three months old to an attack of smallpox. Having survived, although scarred for life, his grateful mother named him Francis, after the patron saint of Goa St Francis Xavier. His mother was a seamstress. One of Souza's better known paintings depicts a sewing machine.

He attended St. Xavier's College in Bombay, beeing expelled for drawing graffiti in a toilet wich he claimed he was correcting, but the priests did not accept his claims.

Souza studied at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay but was expelled in 1945 for his support for the Quit India Movement.

Fænø

Fænø is a small Danish island in the Little Belt off the west coast of Funen in Middelfart Municipality. With an area of 3.9 km², as of 1 January 2010 it has a population of just 2. Reaching a height of 39 metres above sea level at its highest point, the island is privately owned. Fænøgård which used to be the island's farm has now been completely rebuilt in an architecturally modern style. It caters for private parties and has residential facilities. The island is separated from Funen by the 500-meter-wide Fænø Sund and can be reached by private ferry.

Fænøgård

Built in the middle of the 18th century, Fænøgård used to be the island's farmhouse. However, in 2000, Flemming Skouboe, former owner of LM Glasfiber, a Danish windmill firm, purchased the island. He replanted the estate with 700,000 trees and bushes, and put up a modern, three-winged red-brick building designed by schmidt hammer lassen, one of Denmark's leading architectural firms. Completed in 2005, it houses works by many of Denmark's most famous artists including Asger Jorn, Per Kirkeby, P.S. Krøyer, Carl-Henning Pedersen, Christian Lemmerz and Michael Kvium. In addition to the modern manor house, there are also four separate buildings to accommodate guests. The facilities can be used by private groups whether for banquets, hunting parties or to experience the island's natural beauty.

Fín

Fín was an Irish Princess, who lived during the 7th century. She was a daughter or granddaughter of Colmán Rímid (died 604) of Cenél nEógain.

She formed some sort of marriage with Oswiu of Northumbria (c. 612 – 15 February 670), by whom she had Aldfrith (d. 14 December 704/705),
