Eyal Ofer

Eyal Ofer (born 1950) is a Monaco-based Israeli real estate and shipping magnate as well as a major philanthropist. He is the chairman of Ofer Global, Zodiac Maritime Ltd and Global Holdings. He has supported an array of artistic and education projects through the Eyal Ofer Family Foundation.

Early life

Eyal Ofer was born in 1950 in Haifa, Israel. His father, Sammy Ofer, was a Romanian-born Israeli shipping magnate and once Israel's richest man. Eyal graduated from Atlantic College, an international boarding school affiliated with the United World Colleges, based in St Donat's Castle, Wales. In his teenage years, he spent summers working on the family company's ships, loading cargo, scraping the boats' sides and repainting them, as well as traveling to international ports.

He served as an intelligence officer in the Israeli Air Force from 1967 to 1973. He then studied Law in London.

Eyal Ofer’s business interests are concentrated in shipping, cruise lines and global real estate within the Ofer Global group, a Monaco-based private company focused on shipping, real estate, banking and investments in Europe, North America, and Asia.

Eyal (Hebrew: אֱיָל; lit. power, potency, strength) is a kibbutz in the Centre District of Israel close to the Green line. It is under the jurisdiction of the Drom HaSharon Regional Council

Geography

Eyal is located in central Israel within the green line in the central Sharon region, and just to the east of Highway 6. It is approximately 6 km north-east of the city of Kfar Saba. Just to its north-east is the city of Kokhav Ya'ir, and west of the city of Tzur Yigal. To its north-west is the Israeli Arab city of Tira, and to its south is the Palestinian city of Qalqilyah.

History

Eyal was established in 1949 by Nahal volunteers. Israel sought to establish security settlements along its borders, and Eyal was established on what was then the Jordanian border. It is just north of the West Bank town of Qalqilyah.

Economy

The kibbutz initially grew citrus fruits, avocados, bananas, alfalfa, mangos, guavas, peanuts and cotton. They also raised chickens and dairy cows. The banana trees were ploughed under, the guava and mango trees as well, and the sharp drop in world cotton prices forced Eyal, like many other kibbutzim, to stop growing cotton. As profitability for Israeli citrus export is negligible, the kibbutz has significantly reduced its investment in their groves. Eyal still grows field crops, and maintains dairy cows.

Ofer

Ofer (Hebrew: עֹפֶר, lit. Fawn) is a moshav in northern Israel. Located south of Haifa, it falls under the jurisdiction of Hof HaCarmel Regional Council. In 2011 it had a population of 609.

History

The moshav was founded in 1950 by immigrants from India and Iran. Its name is derived from Ayn Ghazal (lit. Deer Spring), the depopulated Arab village on whose land it was built. Agricultural income is derived from raising cattle, sheep and chickens growing vegetables and flowers, and tourism.
