Existenz

Existenz (stylized as eXistenZ) is a 1999 Canadian science fiction body horror film written, produced, and directed by Canadian director David Cronenberg. It stars Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jude Law.

As in Videodrome, Cronenberg gives his psychological statement about how humans react and interact with the technologies that surround them. In this case, the world of video games.

Plot

In the near-future, organic virtual reality game consoles known as "game pods" have replaced electronic ones. The pods are attached to "bio-ports", outlets inserted at players' spines, through biotechnological umbilical cords. Two game companies, Antenna Research and Cortical Systematics, compete against each other. In addition, a group of "realists" fights both companies to prevent the "deforming" of reality.

Antenna Research's Allegra Geller (Jennifer Jason Leigh), the world's preeminent game designer, is testing her latest virtual reality game, eXistenZ, with a focus group at a seminar. She is shot in the shoulder by an assassin named Noel Dichter (Kris Lemche) with an organic pistol, which is undetectable by security. As Dichter is gunned down by the security team, security guard (and marketing trainee) Ted Pikul (Jude Law) rushes to Geller and escorts her outside.

Dasein

Dasein (German pronunciation: [ˈdaːzaɪn]) is a German word which means "being there" or "presence" (German: da "there"; sein "being") often translated in English with the word "existence". It is a fundamental concept in the existential philosophy of Martin Heidegger particularly in his magnum opus Being and Time. Heidegger uses the expression Dasein to refer to the experience of being that is peculiar to human beings. Thus it is a form of being that is aware of and must confront such issues as personhood, mortality and the dilemma or paradox of living in relationship with other humans while being ultimately alone with oneself.

Heidegger's re-interpretation

In German, Dasein is the vernacular term for "existence", as in "I am pleased with my existence" (Ich bin mit meinem Dasein zufrieden). The term Dasein has been used by several philosophers before Heidegger, most notably Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, with the meaning of human "existence" or "presence". It is derived from da-sein, which literally means being-there/there-being – though Heidegger was adamant that this was an inappropriate translation of Dasein.

Existenz (journal)

Existenz is an on-line biannual academic journal covering research in philosophy, religion, politics, and the arts. It was established in 2005 and is the official journal of the Karl Jaspers Society of North America. Its title, Existenz, derives from an essential feature of the philosophy of Karl Jaspers, namely, the notion of mögliche Existenz or "possible self-being" for which Jaspers became famous as one of the world's leading existentialist philosophers in the 20th century.

The proceedings of the Karl Jaspers Society of North America at the annual meetings of the American Philosophical Association are published in Existenz. The editors-in-chief are Alan M. Olson (Boston University) and Helmut Wautischer (Sonoma State University).

    Existenz

    by: Mantus

Traum der Tiefe Rückrad meines Seins
    Letzte Worte Tod im Mondenschein
Meine Augen zeichnen Raum und Zeit
    Meine Tränen fließen meilenweit
Und das Bild in meinem Kopf
    Ist schon nicht mehr existent
Halt mich fest in deinem Arm
Wenn die Welt in mir verbrennt
Glanz der Weite Stern der Illusion
Nacht der Sehnsucht Traum der Rebellion
Meine Hände graben tief ins Fleisch
    Ganze Städte entspringen meinem Geist
Meine Liebe blind die Schatten treibt
Nur der Schmerz wenn nichts mehr übrig bleibt
