The surname Oliver is of several different origins.

Etymology [link]

The surname Oliver is derived from the Old French personal name Olivier. The Oliver surname (meaning "seller, or processor of olive oil") seems to be French Norman in origin. The Olivers were probably part of William the Conqueror's Norman Invasion of Britain in 1066. The Oliver family was a sept of the Scotland Highlands' powerful Fraser Clan and was a very powerful clan themselves in Roxburghshire and the Borders area. It arrived in Scotland and Ireland in the 14th century. This Old French name was introduced to Scotland and Ireland by the Normans. During the Middle Ages, it was a popular name throughout Europe. It was borne by one of Charlemagne's paladins, and friend of Roland.[1] Ostensibly, the name is said to derive from the Latin olivarius, meaning "olive tree".[2] However, all of Charlemagne's paladins bore Germanic names;[2] and the Latin derivation of the name may be a result of folk etymology working on an unidentified Germanic personal name, possibly a cognate of Álvaro;[1] or possibly distantly connected with the Old Norse Óleifr, meaning "ancestral relic".[2]

The Catalan and (Occitan) French surname is a topographic name. It is derived from oliver (pronounced [uliˈβe, oliβe, oliˈve(ɾ)]), meaning "olive tree". It may also be related to the homonymous name listed above.[1]

  • Oliver (song)

"Oliver" was the Norwegian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1979, performed in Norwegian by Anita Skorgan. This was Skorgan's second participation in the Contest; in 1977 she had placed 14th out of 18 entries with "Casanova".

The song is a moderately up-tempo number, with Skorgan addressing a former lover (with whom she sings she broke up four weeks ago) who she sees in a disco. She tells him that if she happens to walk past him, she will ask him for a dance, because she believes that he misses her and she is prepared to give him another chance. English ("Oliver"), German ("(Tanz mit mir) Oliver"), French ("Il faut danser") and Swedish ("Oliver") versions of the song were also released after the Contest.

The song was performed sixteenth on the night, following Sweden's Ted Gärdestad with "Satellit" and preceding the United Kingdom's Black Lace with "Mary Ann". At the close of voting, it had received 57 points, placing 11th in a field of 19.

It was succeeded as Norwegian representative at the 1980 contest by Sverre Kjelsberg & Mattis Hætta with "Sámiid Ædnan". Anita Skorgan returned to the Contest in 1982 with her then husband Jahn Teigen with the duet "Adieu".

    Believer (American Authors song)

"Believer" is the debut single by American indie rock band American Authors. The song was written by band members Zac Barnett, Dave Rublin, Matt Sanchez, and James Adam Shelley, along with producers Aaron Accetta and Shep Goodman. "Believer" first appeared on their 2013 American Authors EP and was released as the band's debut single on March 19, 2012; it was later included on their debut studio album, Oh, What a Life (2014).

    Release

"Believer" initially garnered airplay on United States modern rock radio in early 2013, and was later re-released to modern rock, triple A, hot adult contemporary and mainstream radio following the success of the band's second single "Best Day of My Life". A remix of the song by Dutch DJ Tiësto was issued as a digital single on July 22, 2014. There is an accompanying music video that shows two boys working together to build a time machine

    Critical review

About.com's Kim Jones said that the album "Bottom Line - our lives are a journey and since we know where our ultimate destination lies, the people and the events we find ourselves participating in during the trip take on more importance. Believer mimics that in that it is a journey, but the individual songs speak to different moments in our walks, giving some more weight than others today and then switching it up and highlighting others still tomorrow. Like Jesus meets us where we are at, the well-crafted songs on this album do the same."

    Believer (Chic album)

Believer is the seventh studio album by American band Chic, their last for the Atlantic Records label, and the last featuring the classic line-up of Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards, Alfa Anderson, Luci Martin, and Tony Thompson. The album includes the singles "Give Me The Lovin'" (#57 US R&B), "You Are Beautiful" (issued only in France, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia), and "Party Everybody" (issued only in Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands). The album failed to make much of an impact and shortly after its release the group disbanded. 1983 had seen Nile Rodgers releasing his first solo album, Adventures in the Land of the Good Groove - also largely overlooked, at least on a strictly commercial level. The following production assignment for David Bowie's Let's Dance album was to change the future for both Rodgers and his colleague Bernard Edwards completely.

Believer was transferred to compact disc and re-released by Atlantic Records/Warner Music in 1991. The album was digitally remastered and re-issued by Wounded Bird Records in 2006.
