Ewell Castle School

Ewell Castle School is a co-educational Independent day school for boys aged 3–18 and girls aged 3–11 and 16–18. From September 2015, the school will welcome girls into the Senior School at the normal entry points of age 11 and 13. Founded in 1926 by Mr Herbert Budgell, originally as a boarding school, it is located in Ewell, Surrey. The school consists of the Main House (affectionately known by Ewellians as 'The Castle'), Glyn House and Chessington Lodge. Headteachers are Mrs M. Phillips (BEd) of the Junior School and Mr P. Harris MSc, BSc, PGCE, NPQH, who is Principal of the School.

The school was last inspected in 2012.

Ewell Castle will go fully coeducational from September 2015.

Tutors and teaching

Class sizes are large and are often below 40 in the Sixth Form. An average English or Maths class in GCSE years typically has about 16 pupils in it.

Houses

The school has three Houses: Castlemaine, Raleigh and Essex (colours orange, green and purple, respectively). When they start at the school, pupils are assigned to a house, and they remain in it throughout their school career. If a sibling of an Ewellian pupil were to join the school, they would be assigned to the same house.

Ewell /ˈjuːl/ is a suburban area in the borough of Epsom and Ewell in Surrey with a largely commercial village centre. Apart from this it has named neighbourhoods: West Ewell, Ewell Court, East Ewell, Ewell Grove, and Ewell Downs. One rural locality on the slopes of the North Downs is also a neighbourhood, North Looe. Remaining a large parish, Ewell occupies approximately the north-eastern half of the borough minus Stoneleigh.

It borders a south-west boundary of Greater London at Cheam and is within the capital's commuter belt and contiguous suburbs of the Greater London Built-up Area, 12 miles (19 km) from its centre. Ewell has the main spring, with an adjoining pond, at the head of the Hogsmill river, a small tributary of the River Thames. A majority – 73% – of the population of Ewell is in the ABC1 social class

History

The name Ewell derives from Old English æwell, which means river source or spring.

Bronze Age remains have been found in Ewell and the Romans are likely to have encountered an existing religious site when they first arrived leaving pottery, bones, and a few other remains, which have been taken to the British Museum. Ewell is on a long line of spring line settlements founded along the foot of hills on a geological line between the chalk of the North Downs to the south, and the clay of the London Basin to the north.
