Ripple (charitable organisation)

Ripple is a non-profit click-to-donate internet site and search engine which passes 100% of its revenue to other charities. Launched on May 4, 2007, they make their revenue by attaining sponsorship from advertisers in return for delivering users who will see their advertisements.

The co-founders of Ripple are Jehan Ratnatunga, Matthew Tilleard, Mack Nevill and Simon Griffiths.

How Ripple Works

The Ripple web site generates revenue through two routes: clicking and searching.

A user can click to choose a preferred form of charity, bringing up an advertisement from a sponsor. The sponsor pays Ripple every time an advertisement is viewed, Ripple assigns the sponsor payment to the charity of the web user's choice.

Users can also use the in-built search engine, powered by Google Co-op. Each search generates advertising revenue.

Ripple also enjoys a presence in online social networks such as Facebook and MySpace. Users are now able to add applets that function in the same way as the Ripple web site to their profiles and display how philanthropic they are via a 'contributions' count.

Ripple (electrical)

The most common meaning of ripple in electrical science is the small unwanted residual periodic variation of the direct current (DC) output of a power supply which has been derived from an alternating current (AC) source. This ripple is due to incomplete suppression of the alternating waveform within the power supply.

As well as this time-varying phenomenon, there is a frequency domain ripple that arises in some classes of filter and other signal processing networks. In this case the periodic variation is a variation in the insertion loss of the network against increasing frequency. The variation may not be strictly linearly periodic. In this meaning also, ripple is usually to be considered an unwanted effect, its existence being a compromise between the amount of ripple and other design parameters.

Time-domain ripple

Ripple factor (γ) may be defined as the ratio of the root mean square (rms) value of the ripple voltage to the absolute value of the DC component of the output voltage, usually expressed as a percentage. However, ripple voltage is also commonly expressed as the peak-to-peak value. This is largely because peak-to-peak is both easier to measure on an oscilloscope and is simpler to calculate theoretically. Filter circuits intended for the reduction of ripple are usually called smoothing circuits.

Evolution (Baxter novel)

Evolution is a collection of short stories that work together to form an episodic science fiction novel by author Stephen Baxter. It follows 565 million years of human evolution, from shrewlike mammals 65 million years in the past to the ultimate fate of humanity (and its descendants, both biological and non-biological) 500 million years in the future.

Plot summary

The book follows the evolution of mankind as it shapes surviving Purgatorius into tree dwellers, remoulds a group that drifts from Africa to a (then much closer) New World on a raft formed out of debris, and confronting others with a terrible dead end as ice clamps down on Antarctica.

Evolution (Journey album)

Evolution is the fifth studio album by Journey. Released in April 1979 on Columbia Records, their first album to feature drummer Steve Smith.

It was the band's most successful album at that time, selling three million copies in the US and charting at #20 on the Billboard 200. They retained Roy Thomas Baker (Best known for his work with Queen.) as producer, but drummer Aynsley Dunbar was replaced with Steve Smith, formerly with Ronnie Montrose's band.

According to the book Heavier than Heaven, the album was Kurt Cobain's favorite album from 1979.

In 1999, Sincer Records re-released the album on CD.

Evolution features their first top 20 hit, "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'", which was inspired by the classic Sam Cooke tune "Nothin' Can Change This Love". "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" reached #16 in the US. "Just the Same Way" featured original lead vocalist Gregg Rolie along with Steve Perry.

Evolution (Nektar album)

Evolution is the tenth album by progressive rock band Nektar, released in 2004. It was the first Nektar album since 1977's Magic Is a Child to feature original drummer Ron Howden, who rejoined other founding members Roye Albrighton and Taff Freeman.
