Hugh Evan-Thomas

Vice-Admiral Sir Hugh Evan-Thomas GCB KCMG MVO (27 October 1862 – 30 August 1928) was a British Royal Navy officer.

During World War I he commanded the 5th Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet, flying his flag in HMS Barham, and fought at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May – 1 June 1916.

Background

Evan-Thomas' family came from Wales, where they had owned the Llwynmadoc estate near Beulah, Powys for two hundred years. The family also owned the Gnoll at Neath in Glamorgan and Pencerrig at Builth Wells, but nonetheless suffered a shortage of money to support their seven children in the style they might have wished. Evan-Thomas had to rely upon his own salary rather than family money to support himself through his life.

Hugh Evan-Thomas was born the son of Charles Evan-Thomas, who was High Sheriff of Brecknockshire for 1885 and died at Cople in Bedfordshire aged 65 on 30 August 1928. A memorial service was held at Eglwys Oen Duw church in Llwynmadoc, Wales. A brass plaque in the church records his death. A year later, the council of Neath, Glamorgan purchased the Gnoll estate where Evan-Thomas was born to serve as a public park, where a war memorial would be erected. Jellicoe wrote a tribute to Evan-Thomas saying, 'If I had one loyal and splendid supporter during the Great War in the Grand Fleet, one who never failed me, one who led his ships magnificently, and not only led them magnificently but brought them to a pitch of efficiency that was a pattern for the whole of the Grand fleet, It was Admiral Sir Hugh Evan-Thomas'.

Evan Thomas

Evan Welling Thomas III (born April 25, 1951) is an American journalist and author. He is the author of nine books, including two New York Times bestsellers.

Life and career

Thomas was born in Huntington, New York, and was raised in Cold Spring Harbor, New York. A graduate of Phillips Academy, Harvard University, and the University of Virginia School of Law, from 1991 he was a reporter, writer, and editor at Newsweek for 24 years. Prior to that, he was at Time. Thomas began his reporting career at The Bergen Record in New Jersey. He won numerous journalism awards, including a National Magazine Award in 1998.

Thomas was, for 20 years, a regular panelist on the weekly public affairs TV show Inside Washington until the show ceased production in December 2013.

He taught writing and journalism at Harvard and Princeton between 2003 and 2014. For seven years, from 2007 to 2014, he was the Ferris Professor of Journalism in residence at Princeton.

Family

He is the son of Anna Davis (née Robins) and Evan Welling Thomas II, an editor who worked for HarperCollins and W. W. Norton & Company. His grandfather, Norman Thomas, was a six-time Presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America.

Evan Thomas (priest)

Evan Lorimer Thomas (21 February 1872 – 9 April 1953) was a Welsh clergyman and Professor of Welsh at St David's College, Lampeter (which later became the University of Wales, Lampeter) from 1903 to 1915.

Thomas was the son of a vicar from Caernarvonshire. He was educated at Westminster School and Jesus College, Oxford where he matriculated in 1891 and was a scholar. He trained for ordination in Leeds, and was a curate in Bangor, Wrexham, Cuddesdon and Colwyn Bay in succession between 1897 and 1903. In 1903, he became Professor of Welsh at St David's College, Lampeter, where his actions to strengthen the Welsh language included reviving the honours degree course in Welsh, holding a Welsh Bible class, and establishing a Welsh library and Welsh-speaking society. In 1915, he became vicar of Holywell and in 1922 moved to become vicar of Tywyn near Abergele before he was appointed Archdeacon of Montgomery and vicar of Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain in 1938. He wrote in Welsh on the Gospel of St Luke and 1 Corinthians. He died in 1953 and was buried in Holyhead.

Evan Thomas (rugby league)

Evan Thomas was a Welsh professional rugby league footballer of the 1910s, playing at representative level for Wales, and at club level for Salford, as a hooker, or loose forward/lock, i.e. number 9, or 13.

Championship final appearances

During Evan Thomas' time there was Salford's 5-3 victory over Huddersfield in the Championship final during the 1913–14 season.

Evan Thomas, also known as Peter Evan Thomas was a Canadian-born British character actor, whose career spanned both the silent and sound film eras. He began his career in England, in Lady Windermere's Fan, written by Oscar Wilde.

Born Elystan Owen Evan Thomas in Kent, he appeared in silent films in Great Britain. Starting in 1930, he worked in both Hollywood and England beginning in 1930, before returning permanently to the British film industry after 1946. Over his fifty-year career, he would appear in dozens of films, usually in small roles, although he did have several featured performances, as in 1928's Warned Off, and 1935's Lend Me Your Husband.
