Evan Smith

Evan Smith (born April 20, 1966) is an American journalist. He is the CEO and editor-in-chief of The Texas Tribune and host of the weekly interview program "Overheard with Evan Smith."

Early life and education

Born in New York, Smith has a bachelor's degree in public policy from Hamilton College and a master's degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University (which inducted him into its Hall of Achievement in April 2006).

Career

He previously held editorial positions at a number of national magazines, most recently as deputy editor at The New Republic. Smith has written for Newsweek, GQ, and other national magazines. From February 2003 to August 2010, he hosted a weekly interview program, Texas Monthly Talks, that aired on every PBS station and some public radio stations across Texas. Since September 2010, he has hosted "Overheard with Evan Smith," a weekly interview program that airs on PBS stations nationally.

He sits on the boards of PBS, the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, St. Stephen's Episcopal School, the Austin Community Foundation, and Waller Creek Conservancy. He is also the founding co-chair of the Texas Film Hall of Fame. He served for five years on the board of the American Society of Magazine Editors, most recently as its vice president; for six years on the board of KLRU, Austin's public television station, which he chaired; for nine years on the Austin Film Society board, twice serving as its president; and for eight years on the board of the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin.

Evan Blake Smith (born Evan Blake Dietrich-Smith on July 19, 1986) is an American football center for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL). He has also played for the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks. He played college football at Idaho State. He is of Swiss descent.

Early life

Smith grew up in Salinas, California. He attended and played high school football at Salinas High School in Salinas, CA.

Professional career

Green Bay Packers

He was signed by the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2009 but was waived in the last round of cuts after training camp in 2010.

Seattle Seahawks

On September 5, 2010, he was signed by the Seattle Seahawks before being released on October 5, 2010.

Second stint with the Green Bay Packers

On December 31, 2010, he re-signed with the Green Bay Packers. He got his first championship ring when the Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.

During the 2011 Thanksgiving Classic game between the Packers and the Detroit Lions, Smith was stomped on by Lions defensive tackle, Ndamukong Suh. Suh was ejected from the game and served a two game suspension. Former Green Bay Packer Matt Brock claims that Smith and another Packer linemen kept untying Suh's shoes and that is what led to the stomping incident.

Life

Smith was born in Savannah, Georgia. He attended Vassar College and received an MFA from the Yale School of Drama. His plays have been published by Grove Press and Dramatists Play Service.
