EuroBasket 1949

The 1949 FIBA European Championship, commonly called FIBA EuroBasket 1949, was the sixth FIBA EuroBasket regional basketball championship, held by FIBA Europe. Seven national teams affiliated with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) took part in the competition. The competition was hosted by Egypt after the Soviet Union refused to host it, as was the Soviet's obligation as defending champion under FIBA Europe rules. Czechoslovakia, the silver medallist at EuroBasket 1947, had been the host that year, so was not asked to repeat hosting duties and those duties fell to bronze medallist Egypt.

The event took place in Cairo, with travel difficulties cited by many nations as the reason for not competing. Only four of the seven competing teams were European.

Results

The 1949 competition was in the same format as EuroBasket 1939. Each team played each of the other teams once. A win was worth 2 standings points, a loss worth 1. The rankings were based on those standing points.

EuroBasket 2013

EuroBasket 2013 was the 38th edition of the EuroBasket championship that is organized by FIBA Europe. It took place from 4 September until 22 September 2013 in Slovenia. The number of participating teams was 24.

France defeated Lithuania in the final to win its first title.

Host selection

Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy and Slovenia brought forward a potential candidature for the FIBA EuroBasket. Countries which were interested in submitting a formal candidature had to do so by 31 August 2010. On 5 September 2010, it was announced that only two countries, Slovenia and Italy had submitted formal bids. On 15 October 2010, Italy announced its withdrawal from the run. The Basketball Federation of Slovenia (BFS) thus remained the only candidate organizer.

The decision on the candidacy was officially reported after FIBA Europe's meeting in Munich, Germany on 5 December 2010. In March 2011, the BFS appointed the economist Aleš Križnar as the director of the event.

EuroBasket 2011

EuroBasket 2011 was the 37th men's European Basketball Championship, held by FIBA Europe. The competition was hosted by Lithuania. This was the second time EuroBasket had been held in Lithuania, the country having also hosted the 1939 championship. FIBA Europe asserted that Lithuania managed to organize the best European championship in its history. The top two teams are guaranteed spots at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

EuroBasket 2011 was the largest sporting event in the history of the Baltic states both in terms of the number of national teams (24), matches (90) and that of spectators (158 000 tickets sold with most tickets valid for 3 separate matches.)

Spain won the title for the second consecutive tournament after defeating France 98–85 in the final.

Venues and attendances

The group matches were played in four arenas, namely Alytus Arena, Šiauliai Arena, Cido Arena in Panevėžys and an arena in Klaipėda. The second stage matches were played at the Siemens Arena in the capital Vilnius and the playoffs at the new Žalgiris Arena in Kaunas.
