Týr
Týr (/ˈtɪr/;Old Norse: Týr [tyːr]) is a god associated with law and heroic glory in Norse mythology, portrayed as one-handed. Corresponding names in other Germanic languages are Gothic Teiws, Old English Tīw and Old High German Ziu and Cyo, all from Proto-Germanic *Tīwaz. The Latinised name is Tius or Tio.
In the late Icelandic Eddas, Tyr is portrayed, alternately, as the son of Odin (Prose Edda) or of Hymir (Poetic Edda), while the origins of his name and his possible relationship to Tuisto (see Tacitus' Germania) suggest he was once considered the father of the gods and head of the pantheon, since his name is ultimately cognate to that of *Dyeus (cf. Dyaus), the reconstructed chief deity in Indo-European religion. It is assumed that Tîwaz was overtaken in popularity and in authority by both Odin and Thor at some point during the Migration Age, as Odin shares his role as God of war.
Týr is a god of war and will take mead, meat and blood for sacrifice. If a warrior carved the rune Tîwaz on his weapon he would be dedicating it to Týr and strengthen the outcome of a battle to be in his favor. After a warrior has dedicated his weapon to Týr he should not lose it or break it. Tiw was equated with Mars in the interpretatio germanica. Tuesday is in fact "Tīw's Day" (also in Alemannic Zischtig from zîes tag), translating dies Martis.
Týr (band)
Týr (locally: [tʰʊɪːɹ]) is a Faroese heavy metal band. Their subject matter revolves almost entirely around Viking lore, mythology, and history, taking their name from the Norse god of law and justice. They signed a worldwide deal with Austria's Napalm Records in early 2006, while signed to the Faroese record label Tutl. In September of 2012, they signed a three album deal with Metal Blade Records.
History
Before Týr, Heri Joensen and Gunnar H. Thomsen formed their first band, Cruiser, at the age of seventeen. Streymoy also played with them for a short while. They later changed their name to Wolfgang. Although neither band released any albums, Wolfgang, who are still active, recorded an undisclosed amount of songs that, according to Joensen, are "pretty much ready to release. "
Týr formed in January 1998. Heri Joensen met his old bandmate, Kári Streymoy, at a party in Copenhagen, Denmark. Joensen suggested to Streymoy that they should meet up and jam. Streymoy initially declined, but later took him up on his offer. They were soon joined by another former bandmate, bassist Gunnar H. Thomsen, expanding the duo into a trio. And in 2001 guitarist Terji Skibenæs joined the band.
Tyr (DC Comics)
Tyr is a fictional supervillain in the DC Universe. He first appeared in Superboy Vol. 1, #197 (September 1973), and was created by Dave Cockrum. His name is taken from Týr, the one-handed Norse god of war.
Fictional character biography
Pre-Zero Hour
Tyr is a native of Tyrraz, a mobile planet devoted to the practice of war. Due to an unspecified accident, one of his arms was replaced with a cybernetic gun. In his first appearance in Superboy #197, Tyr kidnaps Legion of Super-Heroes member Timber Wolf (who was believed killed by his fellow Legionnaires), and brainwashes him into becoming an assassin. After an unsuccessful attempt to kill Earth's president, Timber Wolf manages to overcome Tyr and break his conditioning.
Tyr returns in Superboy #199. In this appearance, his gun hand gains the power to control Superboy and, later, Mon-El. He was also briefly a member of the Legion of Super-Villains.
Post-Zero Hour
Following the Zero Hour reboot, Tyr appears as the Tyrrazian representative to the Dark Circle that ruled the Affiliated Planets. He is killed, along with the other members of the Circle, by Brainiac 4 for questioning her decision to declare war on the United Planets.
