Formation and initial success [link]

Originally named Haze for brief period,[9] 8Stops7 formed in Ventura, California in 1996. Vocalist Evan Sula-Goff explained the meaning of the band's name as, "Basically, seven is a symbol of something you want to get away from, and eight is the door you go through to get there." [10] After self-releasing their first self-produced album Birth Of A Cynic, the band signed with Warner Bros. Records/Reprise Records under the Warner Music Group umbrella in 1999 through their manager.

Their second album In Moderation was produced by Toby Wright (KoRn, Alice In Chains, Sevendust) and included re-recordings of 4 songs from the previous album. Two of the songs from In Moderation, "Satisfied", and "My Would-be Savior", were featured on the soundtrack of the Sony PlayStation game Street Sk8er 2. "Satisfied" was also featured in the Sony PlayStation 2 game Gran Turismo 3 and on its soundtrack. The video for "Satisfied" was featured on the MTV show 120 Minutes. "Question Everything" was featured on the Friends Again Soundtrack with other artists featured on the Friends NBC sitcom. Apple placed the music video for "Question Everything" on the Mac OS 9.1 CD, and later included a high-quality mp3 copy of the song to demo the new digital speakers included with the PowerMac G4 Cube.

To date, In Moderation has sold more than 400,000 copies, enjoyed widespread national radio airplay, and spawned two hits that landed on three different Billboard charts.

Exit from Warner [link]

In 2002, when Time Warner, the parent company of 8Stops7's record label, merged with AOL, every artist who hadn't sold 1 million albums in the previous year was dropped with a promise of being re-signed in 2003.[9] However, Warner didn't want to "deal with (the band's manager) anymore".[9] Since the band was signed to their manager and not the label directly, 8Stops7 was not re-signed. The band spent the next few years working to separate themselves from their manager.

Finally in 2006, 8Stops7 was able to self-release their third album Bend on their own label 7spots8 Music.

In 2008, David Cook, the seventh winner of American Idol, named 8stops7 as one of his top 5 favorite and most influential bands.[11]

Current Status [link]

The current line-up consists of all four original members, singer Evan Sula-Goff, guitarist Seth Watson, bassist Alex Viveros, and percussionist Adam Powell along with guitarist Rodney Amieva.

After raising money from fans through the pledgemusic.com website,[12] the band released their fourth album Fables on February 8, 2012.[13] The album's first single is titled "The Sting".[14] "To come back as hard as this band has with Fables is not only to believe in yourself but to know who you are, unequivocally....From the first track to the last, Fables is exactly the kind of post-grunge melodic rock that’s expected of this band, only better...8Stops7 is unattached and arena-ready. Get it." Michelle Cicero, writing for the VCReporter [15]

Self-esteem

In sociology and psychology, self-esteem reflects a person's overall subjective emotional evaluation of his or her own worth. It is a judgment of oneself as well as an attitude toward the self. Self-esteem encompasses beliefs (for example, "I am competent", "I am worthy") and emotions such as triumph, despair, pride, and shame. Smith and Mackie (2007) defined it by saying "The self-concept is what we think about the self; self-esteem, is the positive or negative evaluations of the self, as in how we feel about it." Self-esteem is attractive as a social psychological construct because researchers have conceptualized it as an influential predictor of certain outcomes, such as academic achievement, happiness, satisfaction in marriage and relationships, and criminal behaviour. Self-esteem can apply specifically to a particular dimension (for example, "I believe I am a good writer and feel happy about that") or a global extent (for example, "I believe I am a bad person, and feel bad about myself in general"). Psychologists usually regard self-esteem as an enduring personality characteristic ("trait" self-esteem), though normal, short-term variations ("state" self-esteem) also exist. Synonyms or near-synonyms of self-esteem include: self-worth, self-regard, self-respect, and self-integrity.

Esteem (album)

Esteem was the debut full-length album for Australian synthpop band Machinations. The album was released in April 1983 on White Label Records, a subsidiary of Mushroom Records.

History

In late 1980, Machinations recorded some songs at Trafalgar Studios in November 1980, the band entered the studio with producer Lobby Loyde. These recordings resulted in the band's debut single, "Average Inadequacy"/"Arabia" in September 1981, and the four-track debut self-titled, Machinations EP, in December, both released on the independent Phantom Records label.

"Average Inadequacy" created enough interest for Mushroom's White Label to sign the band and reissue the single with a new B-side, "Machinations of Dance" in March 1982. A year later, Machinations issued a new single, "Jack"/"Be Double" in February 1983, prior to their debut album release, but it failed to chart. Esteem peaked at #54 on the Australian album charts. It was also released in the United States by A&M Records. Musically, the album contained synthpop with dark overtones, except for the single "Pressure Sway", a bright funk/pop song that was a dance-floor favourite.

Esteem

The city slips away too soon
Tonight she's wide awake
Making small talk with Mr. Moon
Singing louder than the rain
On nights like these she can be herself
She forgets I'm there but it's just as well
I always feel like I'm by myself
And she never will, oh never will
She says she hates the fact that men can see
She wants to tear the eyes
out of everythingWhat makes her feel the way she feels
Like everything is nothing
What makes her see the things she sees
Like everything that's wrong with me
I guess I should stop trying to figure her out
I should know by now that I'm not allowed
Now I know this is not allowed
If I want to keep her coming 'round
She says she hates the fact that men can see
She wants to tear the eyes
