Esse quam videri is a Latin phrase meaning "To be, rather than to seem" (to be). It has been used as a motto by a number of different groups.
Esse quam videri is found in Cicero's essay "On Friendship" ("De amicitia", chapter 98). "Virtute enim ipsa non tam multi praediti esse quam videri volunt" (Few are those who wish to be endowed with virtue rather than to seem so).
Just a few years after Cicero, Sallust used the phrase in his Bellum Catilinae (54.6), writing that Cato the Younger "esse quam videri bonus malebat" (He preferred to be good rather than to seem so).
Previous to both Romans, Aeschylus used a similar phrase in Seven Against Thebes at line 592, at which the scout (angelos) says of the seer/priest Amphiaraos: "ou gar dokein aristos, all' einai theile" (his resolve is not to seem the best but in fact to be the best). Plato quoted this line in Republic (361b).
Niccolò Machiavelli reversed the phrase to videri quam esse (to seem rather than to be).

The Rosebuds are an indie rock band from Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. (Not to be confused with the vocal group of the same name who recorded for George Goldner's Gee Records in the 1950s.) Its current members are Ivan Howard (vocals/guitar/drums/bass/keyboards/programming) and Kelly Crisp (vocals/keyboard/drums/guitar/accordion). Billy Alphin had played drums on the album The Rosebuds Make Out, Wes Phillips played drums on the E.P."Unwind", Lee Waters played drums on the record Birds Make Good Neighbors, and Matt McCaughan played the drums on Night of the Furies, Life Like and Loud Planes Fly Low. Rob Lackey was behind the drum kit during the taping of The Rosebuds Live at the Cats Cradle, a charity only recording sold at cytunes.org to help fight for the prevention of cancer, as well as on the track "Second Birds of Paradise" on "Loud Planes Fly Low."
Howard and Crisp met while in college in Wilmington, North Carolina, where they formed the Rosebuds and enlisting original drummer Jonathan Bass. Afterward, they moved to nearby Raleigh and joined with drummer Billy Alphin of the band Ashley Stove. Merge Records discovered their demo in early 2003 and released The Rosebuds Make Out as a full-length debut album that October.
Esse (Finnish: Ähtävä) is a former municipality of Finland, now a village of Pedersöre. It has a population of about 3,000 people, of whom approximately 94% are Swedish-speaking Finns and the rest are Finnish-speaking. The village is in the northeast part of Pedersöre municipality.

Esse was an independent municipality until it merged with Purmo and Pedersöre in 1977, to form the new municipality with the name Pedersöre Kommun.

The Esse 850 is an 8.5 metre long racing sportboat designed by Umberto Felci and built by Josef Schuchter Sportboats of Stafa, Switzerland . The first hull was sold in 2004 and the Esse 850 International Class Association was begun in 2005 in Europe.
The design has achieved some popularity in Europe with over 110 boats in the one-design fleet by mid-2009. The design is unusual in that it is a very high performance sportboat designed to be raced with a crew of 1-4 sailors. Class rules established by Esse 850 International Class have a maximum crew weight of 280 kilos which effectively limits the crew to 3 athletic adults.
The design is characterized by a very large ballast to displacement ratio and a narrow hull of 2.2 metres beam and a tall mast with a high aspect ratio sail plan. In concert with most sportboats, the Esse 850 is designed as an alternative to the complexity of traditional sloop-rigged sailboats, with an emphasis on ease of handling with a small crew and exceptional speeds. Typically, sportboats such as the Esse 850 are much lighter and more powerful than their traditional counterparts. The reduced weight is usually the result of smaller accommodation volume in the hull and lower freeboard, hence less hull structure. The weight reduction over traditional designs means that a larger percentage of the total weight of the boat is concentrated in the keel providing greater stability and the ability to carry a larger sail plan for greater power.
Faster than the earth is turning
Looking up my eyes are burning
At night alone I'm walking
Black cat clever stalking
In the grotto impatient waiting
Before long I see your face and
Whisper a word of greeting
Secret lover's midnight meeting
Chill wind our bodies biting
Whipping round like bolts of lightning
Full moon to some is frightning
Senses reeling pulses tightning
In your arms passion rising
Looking deep into your eyes and
Body movements hypnotizing
Scratching biting screaming crying
As I'm raised out of my body
I'm looking down from above
To be rather than to seem
Eyes meet no word is spoken
Bruised backs and bodies broken
Sitting back the pipe we're token
Bullets shot barrels smoken
Hot sweat our bodies gleaming
In our heat and passion steaming
Laid back to sleep I'm sinking
Of the nights events I'm thinking
As I'm raised out of my body
I'm looking down from above
To be rather than to seem
As I'm raised out of my body
I'm looking down from the sky
