2C-O-4

2C-O-4 or 4-isopropoxy-2,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine is a phenethylamine of the 2C family. It is also a positional isomer of isoproscaline and was probably first synthesized by Alexander Shulgin. It produces hallucinogenic, psychedelic, and entheogenic effects. Because of the low potency of 2C-O-4, and the inactivity of 2C-O, Shulgin felt that the 2C-O series would not be an exciting area for research, and did not pursue any further analogues.

Chemistry

2C-O-4 is in a class of compounds commonly known as phenethylamines, and the full chemical name is 2-(4-isopropoxy-2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)ethanamine.

Effects

Little is known about the psychopharmacological effects of 2C-O-4. Based on the one report available in his book PiHKAL (Phenethylamines i Have Known And Loved), Shulgin lists the dosage of 2C-O-4 as being >60 mg.

Pharmacology

The mechanism that produces the hallucinogenic and entheogenic effects of 2C-O-4 is unknown.

The toxicity of 2C-O-4 is not known.

Legality

2C-O-4 is unscheduled and unregulated in the United States, however because of its close similarity in structure and effects to mescaline and 2C-T-7, possession and sale of 2C-O-4 may be subject to prosecution under the Federal Analog Act.

Carbon suboxide

Carbon suboxide, or tricarbon dioxide, is an oxide of carbon with chemical formula C₃O₂ or O=C=C=C=O. Its four cumulative double bonds make it a cumulene. It is one of the stable members of the series of linear oxocarbons O=C_n=O, which also includes carbon dioxide (CO₂) and pentacarbon dioxide (C₅O₂).

The substance was discovered in 1873 by Benjamin Brodie by subjecting carbon monoxide to an electric current. He claimed that the product was part of a series of "oxycarbons" with formulas C_x+1O_x, namely C, C₂O, C₃O₂, C₄O₃, C₅O₄, ..., and to have identified the last two; however only C₃O₂ is known. In 1891 Marcellin Berthelot observed that heating pure carbon monoxide at about 550 °C created small amounts of carbon dioxide but no trace of carbon, and assumed that a carbon-rich oxide was created instead, which he named "sub-oxide". He assumed it was the same product obtained by electric discharge and proposed the formula C₂O.Otto Diels later stated that the more organic names dicarbonyl methane and dioxallene were also correct.

O.D. is one of the founders of the industrial/metal/electronic band Velcra. He has worked on samples/programming and guitars on the band's first two albums and is the main producer on their third album.

Óðr

In Norse mythology, Óðr (Old Norse for the "Divine Madness, frantic, furious, vehement, eager", as a noun "mind, feeling" and also "song, poetry"; Orchard (1997) gives "the frenzied one") or Óð, sometimes angliziced as Odr or Od, is a figure associated with the major goddess Freyja. The Prose Edda and Heimskringla, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson, both describe Óðr as Freyja's husband and father of her daughter Hnoss. Heimskringla adds that the couple produced another daughter, Gersemi. A number of theories have been proposed about Óðr, generally that he is somehow a hypostasis of the deity Odin due to their similarities.

Etymology

The Old Norse noun óðr may be the origin of the theonym Óðinn (Anglicized as Odin), and it means "mind", "soul" or "spirit" (so used in stanza 18.1 of the Poetic Edda poem Völuspá). In addition, óðr can also mean "song", "poetry" and "inspiration", and it has connotations of "possession". It is derived from a Proto-Germanic *wōð- or *wōþ- and it is related to Gothic wôds ("raging", "possessed"), Old High German wuot ("fury" "rage, to be insane") and the Anglo-Saxon words wód ("fury", "rabies") and wóð ("song", "cry", "voice", "poetry", "eloquence"). Old Norse derivations include œði "strong excitation, possession".
