Endoscopy

Endoscopy means looking inside and typically refers to looking inside the body for medical reasons using an endoscope, an instrument used to examine the interior of a hollow organ or cavity of the body. Unlike most other medical imaging techniques, endoscopes are inserted directly into the organ.

There are many different types of endoscope, and depending on the site in the body and the type of procedure, endoscopy may be performed by a doctor or a surgeon, and the patient may be fully conscious or anaesthetised. Most often the term endoscopy is used to refer to an examination of the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract, known as an esophagogastroduodenoscopy.

For non-medical use, similar instruments are called borescopes.

Endoscopy (journal)

Endoscopy is a monthly peer-reviewed medical journal published by Thieme Medical Publishers on behalf of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. The journal covers all aspects of gastrointestinal endoscopy and also publishes ESGE guidelines and an annual review of the most recent literature, Endoscopy Essentials. Since 2013, the editor-in-chief has been Peter D. Siersema (University Medical Center Utrecht).

Abstracting and indexing

The journal is abstracted and indexed in Index Medicus/MEDLINE/PubMed,Current Contents/Clinical Medicine, Current Contents/Life Sciences,Science Citation Index,Embase, and Scopus. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2013 impact factor of 5.196.

Endoscopic group

In mathematics, endoscopic groups of reductive algebraic groups were introduced by Robert Langlands (1979, 1983) in his work on the stable trace formula.

Roughly speaking, an endoscopic group H of G is a quasi-split group whose L-group is the connected component of the centralizer of a semisimple element of the L-group of G.

In the stable trace formula, unstable orbital integrals on a group G correspond to stable orbital integrals on its endoscopic groups H. The relation between them is given by the fundamental lemma.
