Eddy (surname)

The surname Eddy is used by descendants of a number of English, Irish and Scottish families.

Etymology

Frank R. Holmes, in his Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families, 1600-1700, proposes two possible origins; the Gaelic eddee, "instructor", or from the Saxon ed and ea, "backwards" and "water", a whirlpool or eddy, making the surname Eddy a place-name. Another possible origin is the Saxon root ead, "success" or "prosperity". Ead occurs in numerous commonly used names, as Edgar, Edmund, Edward, Edwin, and the outdated Edwy. John Eddy of Taunton spells the name Eddway in the earliest record so far found. Eddy could also be a diminutive of any one of these names. Robert Ferguson, in his work on English Surnames, believes that Eddy is a place-name: “Eday, Eady, Eddy are from ead, prosperity. Hence the name of the rock Eddiston, on which the celebrated light house is built. From this word are compounded a great number of Anglo-Saxon names of which we have Edward, Edmund, Edgar,Edw Edwin.”

List of Ed, Edd n Eddy characters

The Ed, Edd n Eddy animated television series features an extensive cast of characters created by Danny Antonucci. The series takes place in the fictional town of Peach Creek. The number of characters in Ed, Edd n Eddy is fixed at twelve (thirteen if Plank, a board of wood who acts as one character's imaginary friend, is included).

The show revolves around three main characters (Ed, Edd, and Eddy), usually referred to as "the Eds". There is a secondary group of characters (Kevin, Rolf, Nazz, Jimmy, Sarah and Jonny), and three teenage girls known as "the Kanker Sisters". Most of the children live in the cul-de-sac, while the Kanker Sisters live in the nearby "Park 'n' Flush" trailer park. Eddy's brother is a character mentioned throughout the series, mostly by Eddy, but is never seen until the 2009 premiere of the series' finale movie Ed, Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show; He is the only fully seen adult in the series.

The series' characters have received awards and nominations at the 2002 Fancy Anvil Awards, a fictional award show broadcast on Cartoon Network. Antonucci stated the personalities of the Eds are based on personal traits of himself, and the activities of his two sons, and that the other characters are based on children he grew up with.

Eddy Fort Moda Grog

Eddy Fortes, better known by his stage name Eddy Fort Moda Grog, or Eddy (FMG) is a Rotterdam-based Cape-Verdean rapper, who became popular in Cape Verde the 90s, thus becoming one of the pioneers of the rap and hip hop in Cape Verdean music. His greatest success was his song "Materialista" (Portuguese for materialistc), which samples LL Cool J's Loungin (Who Do you Luv Remix).

In 1995 he came in contact with friend and rapper Nouba. They began to exchange ideas, and they found that they had much in common. That same year the group Cabo Funk Alliance was formed (with Eddy, Alee, Aureon, Jay B & Angel and Nouba). This group was seen as the first controversial Cape Verdean rap group. During that same period, there were also other rap and RnB groups in the Cape Verdean scene, such as Tha Real Vibe, Quatro, and others.

Also in 1995 came the first (and only) album of Cabo Funk Alliance, Hoje ê Kel Dia. It brought a lot of fuss for breaking the "barrier" of traditional music.

Emma (2009 TV serial)

Emma is a four-part BBC television drama serial adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Emma, first published in 1815. The episodes were written by Sandy Welch, acclaimed writer of previous BBC costume-dramas Jane Eyre and North & South, and directed by Jim O'Hanlon. The serial stars Romola Garai as the titular heroine Emma Woodhouse, Jonny Lee Miller as her loyal lifelong friend Mr. Knightley and Michael Gambon as Emma's father, Mr. Woodhouse. The serial originally ran weekly on Sunday nights on BBC One from the 4 to 25 October 2009.

Austen's classic comic novel follows the story of the "handsome, clever and rich" Emma Woodhouse. Dominating the small provincial world of Highbury, Emma believes she is a skilled matchmaker and repeatedly attempts to pair up her friends and acquaintances. Nothing delights her more than meddling in the love lives of others. But when she takes protege Harriet Smith under her wing, her interference has a detrimental effect.

Emma (song)

"Emma", also known as "Emma, Emmaline" or "Emmeline", is a song by Errol Brown and Tony Wilson released as a single by British soul band Hot Chocolate in 1974. It reached number 3 in the UK Singles Chart and number 8 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. After being asked by producer Mickie Most to add "depth and darkness" to his compositions, Brown wrote the song about the death of his mother.

Plot

The song details the love of the (nameless) singer and a girl called Emmaline from the age of five, through a wedding at 17 until her suicide at an unspecified later date. Emma it seems wanted to be a "movie queen" but could never find the breaks and eventually kills herself because "I just can't keep on living on dreams no more."

Emma (1996 TV film)

Jane Austen's Emma is an adaptation of the 1815 novel of the same name. It was adapted for the British television network ITV in 1996, directed by Diarmuid Lawrence and dramatised by Andrew Davies, the same year as Miramax's film adaptation of Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow. This production of Emma stars Kate Beckinsale as the titular character, and also features Samantha Morton as Harriet Smith and Mark Strong as Mr. Knightley.

Davies had recently adapted another Austen novel as the successful 1995 television serial Pride and Prejudice for BBC when he proposed to adapt the novel Emma for the network. BBC had already made such an agreement with another screenwriter however, leading Davies to approach ITV.

Emma received generally positive reviews from critics, who believed it to be superior to the 1996 Miramax film. Most focused on Beckinsale's performance as a positive highlight. It aired on ITV in November 24 1996 and garnered an estimated 12 million viewers. It also was broadcast on the American channel A&E in February 16 1997.
