Emilia (character)

Emília, also known as the Marchioness of Rabicó or Emília, A Boneca Gente ("The Human Doll") is a fictional character and a titular of the Sítio do Picapau Amarelo series of fantasy novels written by Brazilian author Monteiro Lobato. A doll with a rough, antagonistic personality and an independent, anarchist behaviour, Emília is Lobato's most popular creation alongside Jeca Tatu and, according to studies and analyses of his work, she is his personification in the stories and that, towards the character, Lobato expresses his own ideas. Even though, Lobato has stated that Emília is "sometimes so independent that neither I, nor her father, succeed in controlling her". Since 1951, Emília has been adapted to stage plays, theatrical films and television series, portrayed by several actresses (twelve altogether) throughout the decades in Brazil.

History

Emília is a rag doll described as "clumsy" or "ugly", resembling a "witch" that was handmade by Aunt Nastácia, the ranch's cook, for the little girl Lúcia, also known as "Little Nose". Some day, while at the creek of a nearby stream, Lucia fell asleep and was supposedly (as the narrative initially suggests the girl could be dreaming) awaken by a tiny fish and his friend, a cockchafer, while they talked to each other on her upturned nose. The two of them were flung afar after Lúcia sneezed because of their presence.

Character (arts)

A character (or fictional character) is a person in a narrative work of art (such as a novel, play, television series or film). Derived from the ancient Greek word χαρακτήρ, the English word dates from the Restoration, although it became widely used after its appearance in Tom Jones in 1749. From this, the sense of "a part played by an actor" developed. Character, particularly when enacted by an actor in the theatre or cinema, involves "the illusion of being a human person." In literature, characters guide readers through their stories, helping them to understand plots and ponder themes. Since the end of the 18th century, the phrase "in character" has been used to describe an effective impersonation by an actor. Since the 19th century, the art of creating characters, as practiced by actors or writers, has been called characterisation.

A character who stands as a representative of a particular class or group of people is known as a type. Types include both stock characters and those that are more fully individualised. The characters in Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler (1891) and August Strindberg's Miss Julie (1888), for example, are representative of specific positions in the social relations of class and gender, such that the conflicts between the characters reveal ideological conflicts.

Emilia (genus)

Emilia is a genus of herbaceous plants in the family sunflower family, known as tasselflower or pualele.

The members of the genus are distributed mainly in the tropics and sub-tropics of Africa and Asia. Some species have also been placed in the genus Cacalia.

List of Neighbours characters (2011)

Neighbours is an Australian television soap opera that was first broadcast on 18 March 1985. The following is a list of characters that first appeared in 2011, by order of first appearance. All characters were introduced by the shows executive producer Susan Bower. The 27th season of Neighbours began airing on 11 January 2011. That same month saw Jack Finsterer join the cast as Garland Cole. Dieter Brummer made his first appearance as Troy Miller in May and Carolyn Johnstone, a new love interest for Harold Bishop, followed shortly after. Ivan DeMarco and Superintendent Duncan Hayes began appearing in June. Ajay Kapoor, Rhys Lawson, Michelle Tran and Noah Parkin arrived in July. Emilia (telenovela)

Emilia is a Venezuelan telenovela produced by Venevisión and aired between 1979 and 1980. The telenovela was written by Delia Fiallo and stars Elluz Peraza and Eduardo Serrano as the main protagonists.

Plot

Emilia is a young middle-class seamstress who is struggling to work hard in order to support her grandmother, her sister Nereida and her brother Chente. Emilia's family lost their vast fortune, but despite the fact that they are struggling to make ends meet, they cannot resign themselves to accept poverty, as they dream of regaining their former wealth. In the same neighborhood lives Tano, a young man who is in love with Emilia, though Emilia only views him as a friend.

Each member of her family has their own path. Her grandmother lives in a fantasy world, Chente enters the criminal world while Nereida becomes the mistress to a rich, old man called Pipo who is married to Yolanda Aguirre. It turns out that Nereida's older lover is the father of Emilia's boyfriend, Alejandro. Alejandro is a playboy who is committed to marry Marcia, a selfish and capricious woman who will try to separate him from Emilia after Alejandro leaves her in order to marry Emilia.

Persona

A persona (plural personae or personas), in the word's everyday usage, is a social role or a character played by an actor. The word is derived from Latin, where it originally referred to a theatrical mask. The Latin word probably derived from the Etruscan word "phersu", with the same meaning, and that from the Greek πρόσωπον (prosōpon). Its meaning in the latter Roman period changed to indicate a "character" of a theatrical performance or court of law, when it became apparent that different individuals could assume the same role, and legal attributes such as rights, powers, and duties followed the role. The same individuals as actors could play different roles, each with its own legal attributes, sometimes even in the same court appearance. According to other sources, which also admit that the origin of the term is not completely clear, persona could possibly be related to the Latin verb per-sonare, literally: sounding through, with an obvious link to the above-mentioned theatrical mask.
