Elm Park

Elm Park is a suburban district in east London, England, and part of the London Borough of Havering. Located 14.3 miles (23.0 km) east-northeast of Charing Cross, it is identified as a district centre in the London Plan with several streets of shops and a priority for regeneration. Prior to the construction of the extensive Elm Park Garden City development in the 1930s it was a scattered settlement of farms in the south of the parish of Hornchurch. Elm Park has been connected to central London by the electrified District line service since 1935 and the planned development of the area formed part of the interwar private housing boom that was interrupted by World War II. After the war Elm Park expanded with social housing and it has formed part of Greater London since 1965.

History

Toponymy

The place name Elm Park was devised in 1933. It was derived from Elm Farm, which is first recorded in 1777 and was known as Elms in 1883.

Elm Park (Worcester, Massachusetts)

Elm Park is an historic park in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The land the park resides on was purchased in 1854, making it one of the first purchases of land to be set aside for use as a public park in the United States. Elm Park originally consisted of the land bordered by Park Avenue, Russell Street, Elm Street and Highland Street. In 1888, Newton Hill, just across Park Avenue, was purchased by the City of Worcester bringing the total park area to 60 acres (24 ha).

The original portion of Elm Park (east of Park Avenue) was, up until the 1890s merely more than pasture land. Shortly thereafter, it was redesigned and landscaped by the firm of Frederick Law Olmsted and contains meandering walking paths through the landscaping, a pond crossed by two iconic footbridges and a playground. The Newton Hill portion of Elm Park (west of Park Avenue) remains far less landscaped and contains basketball and tennis courts, walking trails and also Doherty Memorial High School, a high school within the Worcester Public Schools system. St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral (founded around 1920) is located adjacent to the park on Russell Street.

Elm Park (Staten Island Railway station)

Elm Park is a station on the abandoned North Shore Branch of the Staten Island Railway (SIR). The station is located in an open cut under the Bayonne Bridge approach in Elm Park, Staten Island, at Morningstar Road between Innis Street and Newark Avenue. It has two tracks and two side platforms. The station is approximately 3.9 miles (6.3 km) from the Saint George terminal of the SIR.

History

The station opened on February 23, 1886 as a surface station. In the early 1930s as part of a grade crossing elimination project, the station was depressed into the current open-cut below grade level, and rebuilt with concrete platforms. The platforms are slightly offset due to the right-of-way crossing at a diagonal with the streets in the neighborhood; each measures about 240 feet (73 m) in length, which would fit three cars of the former ME-1 rolling stock (67 feet in length) or of the current R44 SIR cars (75 feet in length). Exit stairs were located at the west end of the station towards Morningstar Road. An overpass from Eaton Place to Newark Avenue over the line (not connected to the station) was located at the station's east end under the Bayonne Bridge. East of the station past John Street, the line rises onto a concrete trestle built in 1935. Elm Park was closed on March 31, 1953, along with the South Beach Branch and the rest of the North Shore Branch.

Elm Park (stadium)

Elm Park was a football stadium in the West Reading district of Reading, Berkshire, England. The stadium was the home of Reading Football Club from 1896 to 1998. In 1998 they moved to the new Madejski Stadium.

History

In 1889, Reading were unable to continue playing at Coley Park as W B Monck (the local squire) no longer allowed football due to "rowdyism [by] the rougher elements". With club membership exceeding 300 by the time the club went professional in 1895, Reading required a proper ground. A meeting the following year determined that funding would be difficult. £20 was donated by J C Fidler, on the proviso that "no liquors were to be sold" on site. The rest of the cost was financed through donations by wealthy supporters, as well as one large individual donation. A former gravel pit in West Reading was identified as the site, and the area was leased from Councillor Jesse.

The first game at Elm Park was held on 5 September 1896 between Reading and A Roston Bourke's XI. The visitors were a scratch team from Holloway College and thus not registered with the Football Association. Reading were later fined £5 and suspended for playing against an unregistered team. The away team was named after Arthur Roston Bourke, honorary secretary of the Referees' Association. The match was abandoned due to torrential weather; Reading were leading 7–1 when the match ended. £44 was taken on the gate, with an attendance of approximately 2,500.

Elm Park (horse)

Elm Park (foaled 23 January 2012) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old he became regarded as a leading contender for the 2015 British Classic Races after wins in the Royal Lodge Stakes and the Racing Post Trophy. In 2015 he finished third to Golden Horn and Jack Hobbs in the Dante Stakes but finished unplaced in the Epsom Derby. He later won the listed Fortune Stakes.

Background

Elm Park is a bay horse with a white blaze bred in England by the Berkshire-based Kingsclere Stud. He is the first major winner sired by Phoenix Reach, an Irish-bred, British-trained horse whose wins included the Canadian International Stakes, Hong Kong Vase and Dubai Sheema Classic. Elm Park's dam, Lady Brora, was a moderate performer who won one minor race at Great Leighs Racecourse from twelve starts in 2008 and 2009. She was a distant descendant of Own Sister, a full-sister of the leading sire Son-in-Law.

Elm Park was sent into training with Andrew Balding at Kingsclere. He began his racing career in the ownership of the Kingsclere Racing Club but was later bought by Qatar Racing.
